Goodachari

Goodachari (transl. The Spy) is a 2018 Indian Telugu-language spy action film directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka from a story by Adivi Sesh. It stars Sesh, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jagapathi Babu and Prakash Raj, with Supriya Yarlagadda, Vennela Kishore and Madhu Shalini in supporting roles. Released on 3 August 2018 to positive reviews, it was, according to the source, a commercial success. Film Companion lists it among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

Story

After his father is killed on a secret RAW mission, young Gopi is raised by his uncle, also a RAW agent, under the name Arjun Kumar. Arjun dreams of joining RAW, and after 175 applications he is recruited into Trinetra, a secret wing of the agency. He is briefed on a terrorist outfit led by a shadowy figure called Rana, but it has already infiltrated the organisation.

Production

Debut director Sashi Kiran Tikka announced the film in 2017 with Sesh in the lead and Sricharan Pakala as composer. Sesh said the 1966 Krishna film Gudachari 116 inspired it. Krishna declined a cameo but allowed clips from his old films to be used. As a tribute, Sesh plays Agent Gopi with the code number 116. The first look was released on 13 January 2018. Shaneil Deo was the cinematographer and Garry BH the editor.

Sricharan Pakala composed all seven tracks.

Reception

The Times of India gave it 4 out of 5 and said it showed what Telugu cinema can do when it dreams big. The Hindu called it a winning coming-of-age spy story with a racy screenplay. 123telugu gave it 3.5, calling it a notch above Sesh’s Kshanam, and Idlebrain praised it as a genuine spy film that stands on its own.

Awards and sequel

Sesh, Tikka and Rahul Pakala won Best Screenplay at the Zee Cine Awards Telugu. Sesh confirmed a sequel in December 2018.
