Rangasthalam (meaning “Stage” or “Theatre”) is a 2018 Telugu-language period action drama written and directed by Sukumar and produced by Y. Naveen, Y. Ravi Shankar and C. V. Mohan for Mythri Movie Makers. It stars Ram Charan and Samantha, with Jagapathi Babu, Naresh, Prakash Raj, Aadhi Pinisetty and Anasuya Bharadwaj. Released on 30 March 2018 to strong reviews, it became Ram Charan’s highest-grossing film until RRR and is among the highest-grossing Telugu films.

Story

In the 1980s village of Rangasthalam, Chittibabu, a partly deaf, resilient and quick-tempered young man, earns his living pumping water to the fields. The village is controlled by its long-serving president, Phanindra Bhupathi, whose co-operative society exploits farmers with crushing interest rates and land seizures. When Chittibabu’s elder brother, Kumar Babu, returns from the Gulf and decides to challenge Bhupathi, the brothers are drawn into a dangerous political struggle, while Chittibabu pursues his romance with Ramalakshmi. The film’s turns are best left for viewers.

Cast

  • Ram Charan as Chittibabu
  • Samantha as Ramalakshmi
  • Jagapathi Babu as Phanindra Bhupathi, the village president
  • Aadhi Pinisetty as Kumar Babu
  • Anasuya Bharadwaj as Rangammatha
  • Prakash Raj and Naresh in key roles; Brahmaji as a tehsildar
  • Pooja Hegde in the song “Jigelu Rani”

Development

After Nannaku Prematho, Sukumar offered his cinematographer R. Rathnavelu a choice of two stories; Rathnavelu chose the rural drama and suggested setting it in the past. Mythri Movie Makers agreed to produce in October 2016, and production began on 26 February 2017 under the working title RC11; the title Rangasthalam 1985 was later shortened. The budget, according to the source, was ₹60 crore. Ram Charan played the partially deaf hero with a beard and a Godavari accent, and was styled by his sister Sushmita Konidela, while Samantha spent time with village women near Rajahmundry to prepare.

Filming

One of the first Indian films shot entirely on Red Helium 8K cameras, it was filmed from April 2017 to March 2018, mostly on a village set built in Hyderabad, with about ten percent shot around Rajahmundry and the Godavari region. Rathnavelu chose a muted, earthy palette. Devi Sri Prasad composed the songs and score and Naveen Nooli edited the film.

Release and legacy

Critics praised Sukumar’s writing and the ensemble, especially Ram Charan and Jagapathi Babu, though some found it long. According to the source it grossed ₹216 crore. It won the National Film Award for Best Audiography and the Telangana Gaddar Award for Second Best Feature Film, was dubbed into Kannada as Rangasthala in 2019, and was named by Film Companion among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

What critics said

The article describes positive reviews, with particular praise for Sukumar's writing and the ensemble performances, and criticism of the slow pace and near three-hour runtime.

  • Indo-Asian News Service (Subhash K. Jha) called it a film from the heart and praised Ram Charan and Jagapathi Babu.
  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) likened it to a novel with a rooted dialect, and saw it as the defining film for both Sukumar and Ram Charan.
  • The Times of India (Neeshita Nyayapati) called Ram Charan's performance “stupendous”.
  • The Indian Express (Manoj Kumar R) described a well-crafted film made with honesty and regard for the audience.
  • Firstpost (Hemanth Kumar) admired Sukumar's writing and the explosive climax.
