Early life
Swathi was born in Vladivostok, in what was then the Soviet Union, where her father, an Indian Navy officer, was training as a submariner. The Russian doctor who delivered her named her Svetlana, and her mother later changed it to Swathi. She has an elder brother, Siddharth.
The family moved to Mumbai and then to the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, where she spent most of her childhood and attended St. Francis De Sales’ School. She moved to Hyderabad during class 11 and graduated in biotechnology from St. Mary’s College, Hyderabad.
Television
At 17, after her EAMCET exams, she began hosting a television show called Colours. It was well received, was extended and moved to a prime-time slot, and she presented more than 150 episodes.
Film debut
After her first year of college she was offered a part in Krishna Vamsi‘s Danger (2005), where she was one of five leads in an ensemble cast. After her second year she took a supporting role in Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule (2007), which earned her good notices.
Breakthrough
Once she had graduated she signed two films. In 2008 she played her first female lead in the Tamil film Subramaniapuram, and the same year her role in Ashta Chamma won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Actress. That year Rediff.com ranked her second on its list of the best Tamil actresses and fifth among Telugu actresses. She made her Malayalam debut in Amen (2013), which was a big hit.
Voice work and singing
Swathi has also worked as a dubbing artist, voicing Ileana in Jalsa (2008), and in 2010 she lent her voice to an HIV/AIDS education tutorial created by the nonprofit TeachAids.
