Mohana Krishna Indraganti is an Indian film director who works mainly in Telugu cinema. His debut, Grahanam (2005), won eleven awards, including the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director, and his later films include Ashta Chamma (2008), Golconda High School (2011), Anthaka Mundu Aa Tarvatha (2013), Sammohanam (2018) and V (2020).

Early life

Indraganti was born in Tanuku, West Godavari district, to Indraganti Srikanth Sharma and Janaki Bala. His parents and grandparents were writers, and his grandmother’s vivid storytelling, his reading and film talk with an uncle drew him towards cinema. He grew up in Vijayawada, took a BA at Loyola College and an MA in English and philosophy at the University of Hyderabad. After being turned down by FTII, he wrote and co-directed a Doordarshan docu-drama, Mahandhra, and used it to win a place at York University in Toronto, where he completed an MFA in film between 1998 and 2000.

Grahanam

Back in Hyderabad he made a horror short, Chali, which impressed Tanikella Bharani, who became his mentor. After a brief, abandoned stint on Ram Gopal Varma‘s Madhyanam Hathya, he turned to Grahanam, adapted from a story by the writer Chalam. Producers admired the script but doubted its commercial prospects, so he began financing it himself until Bharani, who also acted in it without a fee, introduced him to a producer. The film was shown in the Indian Panorama at IFFI 2005 and won the National, Nandi and Gollapudi Srinivas awards for a debut.

Ashta Chamma and later films

His second film, Mayabazaar (2006), starred Bhumika Chawla and Raja. Ashta Chamma, with Swathi, Nani and Srinivas Avasarala, was a big hit and won the Akkineni Award for Best Home-viewing Feature Film; Golconda High School and Anthaka Mundu Aa Tarvatha, which brought him a Nandi Award for Best Story Writer, also did well.

Recent work

He directed Sudheer Babu in the romantic drama Sammohanam, a profitable film about a cartoonist who falls for an actress, and again in the action thriller V, with Nani.

Other work

He also lent his voice to the film Mithunam (2012).
