Chandoo Mondeti is an Indian film director and screenwriter in Telugu cinema. His successful films include Karthikeya (2014), Premam (2016), Karthikeya 2 (2022) and Thandel (2025). He has received a National Film Award and a Nandi Award.
Background
Mondeti was born in Vemuluru, near Kovvur in Andhra Pradesh. He made his directing debut with Karthikeya in 2014.
Karthikeya
Karthikeya is a mystery thriller starring Nikhil Siddhartha and Swathi Reddy. It follows Karthik, a curious medical student who looks into the mystery of a closed Karthikeya temple in the village of Subrahmanyapuram. Mondeti based the story on an incident at the Talupulamma Temple in Kakinada district. The film was released for Diwali on 24 October 2014 and was well reviewed. According to the source, it collected more than ₹20 crore on a budget of ₹4–6 crore.
Premam and Savyasachi
Mondeti next directed Premam (2016), a Telugu remake of the 2015 Malayalam film of the same name, which was a commercial success. He then made Savyasachi (2018), starring Naga Chaitanya with Madhavan in his Telugu debut. It did not do well at the box office.
Bloody Mary
His crime drama Bloody Mary (2022) stars Nivetha Pethuraj, Brahmaji, Ajay and Kireeti Damaraju. Set in Visakhapatnam, it follows three orphaned childhood friends, Mary, Raju and Basha, who get caught up in a murder case. It was released directly on the streaming platform Aha in April 2022.
Karthikeya 2 and Thandel
The sequel Karthikeya 2 was launched in March 2020 with a puja ceremony in Tirupati. It was filmed mainly in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, with further shooting in Spain, Portugal and Greece. Nikhil Siddhartha returned alongside Anupama Parameswaran and Anupam Kher. Released in August 2022 to positive reviews, it became the highest-grossing film of Mondeti’s career. For his third film with Naga Chaitanya, Thandel, he cast Sai Pallavi as the female lead. It was released in February 2025.
