Karthikeya is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language mystery thriller written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti and produced by Venkata Srinivas. It stars Nikhil Siddhartha and Swathi Reddy, with Tanikella Bharani, Rao Ramesh and Jayaprakash in supporting roles. Released for Diwali on 24 October 2014, it was well reviewed and, according to the source, grossed over ₹20 crore on a budget of ₹4–6 crore. It led to a successful sequel, Karthikeya 2, in 2022.

Story

In the village of Subrahmanyapuram, an old Subrahmanya Swami temple has been shut after a series of mysterious deaths blamed on snakebites, and anyone who comes to investigate also dies. Karthik, a medical student who trusts only science and logic, arrives for a medical camp with Valli, the woman he loves. He becomes curious about the closed temple and sets out to solve its mystery.

Cast

  • Nikhil Siddhartha as Karthikeya “Karthik” Kumaraswamy
  • Swathi Reddy as Srivalli “Valli”
  • Tanikella Bharani as Valli’s father
  • Rao Ramesh as Prudhvi Raj
  • Jayaprakash as Dr. Prakash
  • Kishore as Sahadev
  • Raja Ravindra as Shankar, an Endowments Department officer

Development

After Swamy Ra Ra, Nikhil signed on with his friend Chandoo Mondeti, and Venkat Srinivas produced under Magnus Cine Prime. The story was inspired by an incident at the Talupulamma Temple in Kakinada district. Nikhil gained 10 kilograms for the role, spent time with medical students and doctors, and had to overcome his fear of injections and blood. Shekar Chandra composed the music, and Karthik Ghattamaneni was the cinematographer.

Filming

The film was launched in Hyderabad on 10 June 2013, and shooting ran from 5 July 2013 to 21 February 2014. Locations included Araku, Bobbili and the Kumararama temple at Samarlakota in Andhra Pradesh, along with Pondicherry and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Nearly half the film was shot in Tamil Nadu. A parallel Tamil version was dropped in favour of a dubbed release.

Release and reception

After several delays, the film opened on 24 October 2014 on 350 screens, and more were added as it found an audience. It was a commercial success. It earned four nominations at the 62nd Filmfare Awards South and won one of its four nominations at the 4th SIIMA Awards.

What critics said

The article describes generally positive reviews for a thriller that stands apart from routine Telugu films, with some criticism of its slow narration.

  • The Times of India (Hemanth Kumar) called it one of the finer films of recent times because it sticks to its story.
  • 123Telugu.com praised a novel concept, gripping screenplay, Nikhil's performance and clever suspense.
  • Idlebrain.com (Jeevi) called it different yet interesting, though slow-paced, with family drama and romance that did not work.
  • Deccan Chronicle (Suresh Kavirayani) called it a refreshing thriller with a tight screenplay and a successful debut for Chandoo Mondeti.

Box office: the article reports ₹10 crore at the global box office in the first week.
