Drushyam (transl. Vision) is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language crime thriller directed by Sripriya and produced by D. Suresh Babu and Rajkumar Sethupathi. A remake of the 2013 Malayalam film Drishyam, it stars Venkatesh, Meena, Esther Anil and Kruthika Jayakumar. Released on 11 July 2014 to positive reviews, it became one of the year’s highest-grossing Telugu films. According to the source, it earned a distributors’ share of ₹200 million.
Story
Rambabu, a film-loving cable TV operator in a village in the Araku region, lives with his wife Jyothi and their two daughters. When Varun, the spoilt son of the Inspector General of Police, goes missing soon after harassing Rambabu’s elder daughter, the family falls under suspicion. The film follows what Rambabu does to keep his family out of prison.
Development
Rajkumar Sethupathi bought the remake rights and, on Kamal Haasan’s suggestion, chose Venkatesh for the lead. Suresh Babu joined as co-producer, and Sripriya was brought in to direct. It was Venkatesh’s first film with a woman director. The film was launched in Hyderabad on 21 February 2014, and it marked the golden jubilee of Suresh Productions. The dialogue was written by ‘Darling’ Swami and the Paruchuri Brothers.
Casting
Venkatesh took on the role Mohanlal played in the original. Meena reprised her role, returning to Telugu cinema after sixteen years in her fifth film with Venkatesh. Nadhiya plays the Inspector General, a role she compared to a lioness protecting her family. Esther Anil reprised the younger daughter, and 17-year-old Kruthika Jayakumar was cast as the elder daughter. Naresh, Chaitanya Krishna and Ravi Kale also appear, and Roshan Basheer reprised the role of Varun.
Filming
Principal photography began on 8 March 2014 and lasted three months. Like the original, it was shot mainly in Kerala, with further work in Araku, Simhachalam, Vizianagaram and Hyderabad. Sharreth composed the music, S. Gopal Reddy was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor.
Sequel
A sequel, Drushyam 2, a remake of Drishyam 2, was released on Amazon Prime Video in November 2021.
