Gopala Gopala is a 2015 Telugu-language satirical comedy drama directed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani. It stars Venkatesh as an atheist who takes God to court, with Pawan Kalyan in an extended cameo as Krishna. A remake of the 2012 Hindi film OMG – Oh My God!, it was produced by D. Suresh Babu and Sharrath Marar under the Suresh Productions and North Star Entertainment banners, and it was both well reviewed and commercially successful.

Story

Gopala Rao is an atheist and a prosperous businessman who runs a shop selling idols of Hindu gods. His wife Meenakshi is deeply religious. When an earthquake destroys his mortgaged shop, his insurer refuses to pay, calling the disaster an “Act of God”, and he is left facing ruin.

Seeking justice, Gopala Rao decides to sue God. With the help of a lawyer, Akbar Khan, he names several self-styled godmen as God’s representatives in the case, and quickly finds himself facing threats and public anger. Help arrives from an unexpected quarter: a stranger named Govinda Gopala Hari, who is really Lord Krishna in disguise, begins to guide him. The courtroom battle and its effect on Gopala Rao’s family and on the people who rally around him form the rest of the film, which this summary leaves unspoiled.

Cast

  • Venkatesh as Gopala Rao
  • Pawan Kalyan as Krishna, in an extended cameo

Shriya Saran, Mithun Chakraborty, Ashish Vidyarthi and Posani Krishna Murali play supporting roles.

A story with a long lineage

The film sits at the end of a chain of adaptations. It remakes Umesh Shukla’s Hindi film OMG – Oh My God! (2012), which was based on the Gujarati stage play Kanji Viruddh Kanji, which in turn took inspiration from the 2001 Australian film The Man Who Sued God.

Development and casting

In early April 2013 the Paruchuri Brothers told the media they were close to acquiring the Telugu remake rights, and there were reports at the time that Ravi Teja would play Krishna, the part Akshay Kumar had played in the Hindi original. In the end it was D. Suresh Babu who acquired the rights, in mid-November 2013, and Venkatesh was confirmed in the lead, with Kishore Kumar Pardasani chosen to direct. After a period of speculation, Suresh Babu confirmed in mid-February 2014 that Pawan Kalyan would play Krishna.

Production

The film had a budget of ₹12 crore. Production began on 9 June 2014, and most of the shooting took place in and around Visakhapatnam, with some portions filmed in Hyderabad and Varanasi. Jayanan Vincent was the cinematographer and Anup Rubens composed the music.

Release and box office

Gopala Gopala was released worldwide on 10 January 2015 as a Sankranthi release. Critics gave it positive reviews. According to the source, it grossed ₹88.1 crore, with a distributor share of ₹41.1 crore, making it a commercial success.

What critics said

Reviewers cited in the article largely welcomed the remake of the Hindi film OMG – Oh My God!, with its big-name leads and its theme of faith against superstition, though some felt it copied the original too closely.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) found it largely true to the original and heart-warming for taking up spirituality versus superstition.
  • IBN Live (Karthik Keramalu) compared its challenge to blind faith with the Hindi film PK and enjoyed seeing the two leads together.
  • The Times of India (Hemanth Kumar) credited the film with thought-provoking questions and conversations between the characters of Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan.
  • Deccan Chronicle (Suresh Kavirayani) found the second half and climax slow, but recommended it to those who had not seen the original.
  • IANS felt the remake reproduces the original scene for scene at the cost of creativity.

Box office: the article reports an opening-day share of around ₹9.19 crore, the fourth-highest opener at the AP/Nizam box office at the time.
