Yevadu (Who is he?) is a 2014 Telugu-language action thriller co-written and directed by Vamsi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju under the Sri Venkateswara Creations banner. Ram Charan plays the protagonist, and the cast also includes Allu Arjun, Shruti Haasan, Kajal Aggarwal and Amy Jackson. Its core idea was partly inspired by John Woo’s 1997 American film Face/Off. Released during Sankranthi after several delays, it was well reviewed and became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2014.

Premise

The story revolves around two strangers, Satya and Charan. Satya and his fiancée, Deepthi, live in Visakhapatnam and are in danger after a feared gangster sets his sights on her. They try to escape to Hyderabad by bus, but the journey ends in a brutal attack that leaves Satya close to death.

A doctor saves his life by giving him a new face. When Satya wakes from a coma months later, he finds that nobody recognises him, and he uses his new anonymity to go after the men responsible. He does not yet know whose face he now wears, and that question links his story to Charan’s. The way the two threads meet is the film’s main twist, and it is left out here.

Cast

Alongside the five leads, the film features a supporting cast including:

Development

Dil Raju wanted to produce a technically driven film and chose a script by Paidipally, who had previously made family dramas such as Brindavanam (2010) and wanted to try the action genre. Paidipally built his screenplay on a story by Vakkantham Vamsi and worked on it for nearly two months before sharing it with Ram Charan. Raju announced the project in early October 2011, naming Ram Charan as the lead. The film was formally launched in Hyderabad on 9 December 2011, when its title and first-look poster were revealed.

Production

According to the source, the film was made on a budget of ₹35 crore. Principal photography began on 27 April 2012 and continued until 22 July 2013. Most of the shooting took place in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad, much of it at Ramoji Film City, while two songs were filmed in Switzerland and Bangkok.

C. Ram Prasad was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor. Anand Sai handled art direction, and Abburi Ravi contributed to the dialogue.

Music

Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, in his first collaboration with both Paidipally and Ram Charan. The music sessions were held in Goa.

Release and box office

Yevadu was released on 12 January 2014, during the Sankranthi festival, after a series of delays. It received positive reviews and did well commercially. According to the source, it earned a distributor share of ₹47.1 crore, placing it among the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2014.

What critics said

According to International Business Times India, as cited in the article, the film received decent feedback from critics, most of whom saw it as a mass entertainer with familiar revenge elements.

  • The Hindu (Y. Sunita Chowdary) felt the film was made only for the mass audience and criticised prolonged revenge sequences, while praising Devi Sri Prasad's music and C. Ram Prasad's cinematography.
  • Bangalore Mirror (Sridhar Vivan) called it a treat for Ram Charan's fans but “strictly average stuff” for others, pointing to violence, little comedy and predictable turns.
  • Sify said it starts with novelty but ends up a regular revenge drama that works to some extent.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) criticised its similarities to Face/Off and its hard-to-follow action choreography.

Box office: the article reports lifetime collections of ₹39.34 crore at the AP box office and ₹47.1 crore worldwide.
