Bangaru Bullodu (transl. “Golden Guy”) is a 2021 Telugu comedy directed by P. V. Giri from a screenplay by Veligonda Srinivas, produced by Sunkara Ramabrahmam and Ajay Sunkara under AK Entertainments. Allari Naresh plays a bank’s gold appraiser from a family of goldsmiths, opposite Pooja Jhaveri. It was released in theatres on 23 January 2021 and was poorly received by critics.

What the story is about

Bhavani Prasad comes from a respected family of goldsmiths and works as a gold appraiser at a bank, where he sometimes helps his manager borrow customers’ pledged gold for personal use. He lives with his grandfather and two older brothers, both good-for-nothing gamblers, in a village known for a deity who is said to bring quick marriages to anyone who prays there. When the grandfather hears that the government is about to take over the temple, he has a stroke, and on recovering he tells Bhavani a secret from twenty years ago, involving the temple’s jewels. Putting that right becomes Bhavani’s mission, and his methods drag in a money-lender, Nagaraju, and his daughter Mahalakshmi. We will leave the scheme and its complications to the film.

Reviews

Critics were unimpressed. Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu called it an “unappealing gold rush” whose premise is squandered by cringe-inducing comedy, though her review’s headline says Allari Naresh shines. Thadhagath Pathi of The Times of India gave it 2 out of 5, writing that the story “has potential but reels under the weight of a lot of nonsensical elements”. The reviewer for Sakshi found the storyline routine apart from the climax and said the film fails to raise laughs. We have not found box-office figures from a named outlet.
