Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha (lit. “Krishna’s Great Love Tale”) is a 2016 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy thriller written and directed by Hanu Raghavapudi. It was produced by Ram Achanta, Gopichand Achanta and Anil Sunkara under 14 Reels Entertainment. Nani stars with debutant Mehreen Pirzada, and Harish Uthaman, Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma and Brahmaji play supporting roles. Released on 12 February 2016, it is listed by Film Companion among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

Story

Krishna, a timid young man, is secretly in love with Mahalakshmi, whose brother is a loyal follower of Rajanna, a Rayalaseema faction leader. Rajanna’s brother is a ruthless encounter specialist, and an international mafia don named David has just returned to Hyderabad. When hired killers attack Rajanna’s house, the unlikely hero is handed the job of getting the policeman’s children safely back to him.

Production and music

The first look was released on 7 January 2016. Vishal Chandrasekhar composed the soundtrack with lyrics by Krishna Kanth, and Lahari Music released the album on 25 January 2016. J. Yuvaraj was the cinematographer.

Reception

The Hindu called it an unlikely love story with plenty of humour set in the rugged Rayalaseema terrain, and praised the music, cinematography and Nani. Deccan Chronicle called Nani a bankable star and said Mehreen did not look like a debutante at all. Sify praised Raghavapudi’s distinctive style and rich visuals.

Box office in India

According to the source, the film grossed ₹3 crore on its opening day in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. That made it Nani’s biggest opener at the time, beating Bhale Bhale Magadivoy. It grossed ₹10.86 crore over the opening weekend.

Overseas

In the United States it collected $464,239 over its first weekend and $772,482 over 31 days. It did not cross the $1 million mark.
