V is a 2020 Indian Telugu-language action thriller directed by Mohana Krishna Indraganti and produced by Dil Raju under Sri Venkateswara Creations. It stars Nani, Sudheer Babu, Nivetha Thomas and Aditi Rao Hydari. It was Nani’s 25th film as a lead actor and his first as an antihero. Released on Amazon Prime Video on 5 September 2020, it was one of the first major Telugu films to skip cinemas and go straight to streaming.

Story

DCP Aditya, a decorated police officer in Hyderabad, receives a gallantry medal. The next night an inspector is brutally murdered by an unknown killer who leaves a note challenging Aditya to catch him. The killer then calls to say he will commit four more murders, and dares Aditya to stop him or give up his medals. Aditya’s hunt is complicated by Apoorva, an aspiring crime novelist who had been in contact with the first victim.

Development

Indraganti originally planned a sequel to his 2016 film Gentleman, with Nani and Sharwanand. After Sharwanand left and Dulquer Salmaan was unavailable, Sudheer Babu joined, reuniting with the director after Sammohanam. The project became a new crime thriller, with Nani in a role with negative shades and Sudheer Babu reported to play a police officer. Aditi Rao Hydari and Nivetha Thomas signed on in spring 2019, and the title V was announced on 29 April 2019.

Filming

Filming took place mainly in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Thailand. Nani joined the shoot in August 2019. Major scenes, including action sequences in a forest near Phuket, were filmed in Thailand, where Sudheer Babu was injured during a stunt. Shooting wrapped in January 2020. P. G. Vinda was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor.

Music

Amit Trivedi composed the songs, his third Telugu film after Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy and That is Mahalakshmi, and S. Thaman composed the background score. The first single, “Manasu Maree”, was released on Nani’s birthday in February 2020.

Release

The planned Ugadi release on 25 March 2020 was called off because of the COVID-19 lockdown. With cinemas still shut, the makers chose to go digital. Amazon announced 5 September 2020 as the digital launch date. The film reference record reports that it became available a day early, on 4 September; the announced launch and reported early availability are distinct. It was re-released in theatres on 1 January 2021. In March 2021 the Bombay High Court briefly ordered it taken down until an actress’s image, used without her consent, was removed.

Reception

Reviews were mixed. Critics praised the performances, especially those of Nani and Sudheer Babu, along with the music and cinematography. Many found the script predictable and the pacing weak. The source says it was nonetheless the most-watched Telugu film on a streaming platform in 2020. Sudheer Babu won the SIIMA Critics Choice Award for Best Actor – Telugu for his performance.

What critics said

Reviews cited in the article were mostly disappointed, finding a solid premise let down by the screenplay.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) felt the pale story does not make you root for its main characters.
  • Firstpost (Hemanth Kumar) argued that a top Telugu star cast as an anti-hero cannot be truly diabolical.
  • The Hindustan Times (Haricharan Pudipeddi) called it “a major misfire” for director Indraganti and a disappointment for Nani.
  • The Indian Express (Manoj Kumar) felt Vishnu's character gets far more care than the others.
  • India Today saw a solid premise that could have been a slick thriller, with some interesting moments.
