Ami Thumi (meaning “Fight it out”) is a 2017 Telugu-language romantic comedy written and directed by Mohanakrishna Indraganti and produced by K. C. Narasimha Rao. It stars Adivi Sesh, Eesha Rebba, Srinivas Avasarala, Aditi Myakal, Tanikella Bharani and Vennela Kishore, and is loosely based on Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s comic opera The Duenna.
Story
Two couples are in love: Vijay and Maya, and Vijay’s sister Deepika and Ananth. Deepika’s father, Janardhan, opposes her romance and is also a business rival of Maya’s father. While Maya threatens to become a nun, Janardhan arranges Deepika’s marriage to the eccentric Sri Chilipi, whom she then tricks into helping the lovers. The comedy follows their schemes to change Janardhan’s mind.
Cast
- Adivi Sesh as Ananth
- Eesha Rebba as Deepika
- Srinivas Avasarala as Vijay
- Aditi Myakal as Maya
- Tanikella Bharani as Janardhan, father of Vijay and Deepika
- Vennela Kishore as Sri Chilipi
Production and music
The film was shot in just 31 days, with 13 more days of post-production, mostly indoors. Mani Sharma composed the music, released by Aditya Music; P. G. Vinda was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor. The same source story had earlier inspired the 1971 film Ananda Nilayam.
Reception
Many critics enjoyed it as a screwball comedy. Firstpost praised its humour and a tone long missing from Telugu cinema, and The News Minute called it screwball comedy at its finest. Vennela Kishore drew particular praise: The Hindu called him the star of the film and The News Minute predicted awards for his Sri Chilipi. The Times of India and Sify were more reserved, finding only scattered laughs.
Performances
Deccan Chronicle noted that Adivi Sesh had far more screen time than Srinivas Avasarala, whose role was close to a cameo, praised Eesha Rebba’s authentic Telangana accent, and said Tanikella Bharani did well in another important part.
