Gouravam (transl. Honour) is a 2013 Indian social thriller written and directed by Radha Mohan and shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil. It was produced by Prakash Raj under Duet Movies. It marked the acting debut of Allu Sirish and co-stars Yami Gautam, with Prakash Raj, Harish Uthaman, Nassar, Elango Kumaravel and Brahmaji in supporting roles. The film deals with honour killing. It was released on 19 April 2013 to mixed reviews.

Story

Arjun, a wealthy young man, happens to pass through T. Vennure, the village of his best friend Shanmugam. There he learns that Shanmugam eloped six months earlier with Rajeshwari, the daughter of a powerful landlord obsessed with his family’s prestige, and that the couple has been missing ever since. With help from a young lawyer, Yamini, Arjun stays on to find out what happened to his friend, in the face of strong opposition from the landlord’s family.

Development and casting

The project was first announced in August 2011 as the Tamil debut of Naga Chaitanya. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was cast as the heroine, and the film was set up under Annapurna Studios. Both actors later left. The lead went to Allu Sirish, son of producer Allu Aravind and brother of Allu Arjun, and Yami Gautam was chosen as the heroine after several actresses were considered. Prakash Raj took over production under Duet Movies, and he also plays the village elder.

Filming and music

Filming began in Chennai on 25 June 2012 and continued in Mysore. S. Thaman composed the four-song soundtrack, released on 31 March 2013. The Telugu audio launch was held at an IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Pune Warriors India on 5 April 2013.

Release and controversy

The film was released on 19 April 2013 with a linear narrative in the Tamil version and a non-linear one in the Telugu version. After the trailer came out, a local leader in Tamil Nadu claimed the film could provoke violence and supported honour killing. Director Radha Mohan denied it.

Reception

Critics praised the performances and the message but found the film short on entertainment and suspense. The Times of India called it predictable despite good intentions, and The Hindu said the Telugu version had a good premise but never became gripping. Many commended Allu Sirish for choosing an offbeat film for his debut.
