Allu Arjun is an Indian actor who works in Telugu cinema. Known for his dancing and billed as “Stylish Star” and later “Icon Star”, he became the first Telugu actor to win the National Film Award for Best Actor, for Pushpa: The Rise (2021). Its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), ranks among the highest-grossing Indian films.
He was born on 8 April 1982 in Madras (now Chennai), according to Wikipedia and the preferred date on Wikidata; Wikipedia notes that some sources give 1983. He is the son of film producer Allu Aravind and the grandson of comedian Allu Ramalingaiah, and a first cousin of Ram Charan.
Career
After appearing as a child in Vijetha (1985) and as a dancer in Daddy (2001), he made his lead debut in K. Raghavendra Rao’s Gangotri (2003). His breakthrough was Sukumar’s Arya (2004), which earned him a Nandi Special Jury Award, and he followed it with Bunny (2005), Happy (2006) and Puri Jagannadh’s Desamuduru (2007), a commercial success.
Bhaskar’s Parugu (2008) brought his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. Arya 2 (2009) gave him a character with grey shades, and in Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi’s anthology Vedam (2010) he played the cable operator Anand “Cable” Raju, a performance The Times of India called “scintillating”; it won him a second Filmfare Best Actor award.
Trivikram Srinivas’s Julai (2012) and Puri Jagannadh’s Iddarammayilatho (2013) were followed by Surender Reddy’s Race Gurram (2014), his first ₹100 crore grosser and a third Filmfare Best Actor win. In 2015 he starred in S/O Satyamurthy and played the Telangana-speaking warrior Gona Ganna Reddy in Gunasekhar’s 3D historical Rudhramadevi, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Character Actor.
Boyapati Srinu’s Sarainodu (2016) was a major commercial success despite negative reviews of its story. Duvvada Jagannadham (2017) and Naa Peru Surya (2018) came next, and Trivikram’s Ala Vaikunthapurramloo (2020) became the highest grosser of his career at that point, its song “Butta Bomma” drawing a wide response.
Reuniting with Sukumar, he played the coolie-turned-red-sanders-smuggler Pushpa Raj in Pushpa: The Rise, released in December 2021. Reviews of the film were mixed, but his performance was praised, and Wikipedia reports a gross of over ₹350 crore. The sequel was released on 5 December 2024 and, according to Wikipedia citing Pinkvilla, earned more than ₹1500 crore worldwide.
