Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (transl. The Jasmine Vine in Seethamma’s Courtyard), or SVSC, is a 2013 Indian Telugu-language comedy drama written and directed by Srikanth Addala and produced by Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations. It stars Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu, Anjali and Samantha. The supporting cast includes Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Rao Ramesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Abhinaya and Rohini Hattangadi. It is widely seen as Telugu cinema’s first big multi-starrer in decades. It was released on 11 January 2013 to acclaim and was a commercial success.

Story

A kind-hearted man, affectionately known as Relangi Mavayya, lives in his home town with his wife, children, elderly mother and his orphaned niece Seetha, whom the family has raised. His two sons could not be more different. The elder, Peddodu, is reserved and quick to take offence, while the younger, Chinnodu, is sharp-witted and flirtatious. Everyone assumes Seetha will marry Peddodu. The film follows the family’s bonds, quarrels and romances.

Cast

  • Venkatesh as Peddodu, the elder brother
  • Mahesh Babu as Chinnodu, the younger brother
  • Samantha as Chinnodu’s love interest
  • Prakash Raj as the brothers’ father
  • Rohini Hattangadi as their grandmother
  • Rao Ramesh as Samantha’s father; Abhinaya as the brothers’ sister
  • Anjali, who replaced Amala Paul early in filming

Development

Addala spent three years on the script after his debut, Kotha Bangaru Lokam (2008). Dil Raju first planned the film in 2010 with Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan. When that stalled, Addala took the script to Mahesh Babu in 2011. Both stars said they signed because of the script’s emotional depth and realism. Ganesh Patro wrote the dialogue in the Godavari dialect. Mickey J. Meyer composed the songs and Mani Sharma the score. K. V. Guhan was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor.

Filming

The film was launched in Hyderabad on 6 October 2011. Principal photography ran from 18 January to 24 December 2012, starting in Visakhapatnam and moving through Kutralam, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Ahobilam, Relangi and Bhadrachalam. Crowds disrupted shooting in Hyderabad several times, so some scenes moved to Chennai. Part of the song “Yem Cheddaam” was the first Telugu film footage shot at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront.

Box office and awards

According to the source, the film earned a distributor share of ₹51 crore on a ₹40 crore budget. It was the year’s second-highest-grossing Telugu film after Attarintiki Daredi. It won two awards each at the Filmfare Awards South and SIIMA, including Best Actor for Mahesh Babu and Best Female Playback Singer for K. S. Chithra. It also won four Nandi Awards, among them Best Home-viewing Feature Film.

What critics said

The article describes critical acclaim for a family drama about sibling and family bonds, with praise for the cinematography, music and cast.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) called it a “delightful family drama”, noting that director Srikanth Addala wants viewers to reflect on their own relationships.
  • Daily News and Analysis (Mahalakshmi Prabhakaran) called it a heartwarming watch with its message in the right place.
  • IANS found hardly a dull moment in a crowd-pleasing family entertainer.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) described an old-fashioned family drama without the usual masala, pleasant and well intended.
  • Sify said it leaves you moist-eyed but runs on a flimsy story, comparing it to Sooraj Barjatya's films.

Box office: the article reports ₹9.81 crore on the first day at the AP-Nizam box office, which trade analyst Trinath called probably the best opening for a multi-star Telugu film.
