Bachchala Malli

Bachchala Malli (also spelt Bachhala Malli) is a 2024 Telugu period drama written and directed by Subbu Mangadevvi and produced by Razesh Danda and Balaji Gutta through Hasya Movies. Allari Naresh plays the title role opposite Amritha Aiyer, with Rao Ramesh, Kota Jayaram and Rohini. It was released on 20 December 2024 to mixed reviews.

What the story is about

Malli is a feared, hard-drinking village tough who stitches jute bags for a living. The film moves between 1985 and 2005 to show how he got there: a bright student who topped his district, he never forgave his father for leaving the family for another woman, and that wound shapes every choice he makes afterwards. A love story with Kaveri, a student, and a business feud with the village president Ganapathi Raju give him a chance to change, and test whether he can let go of his anger.

Crew and music

Subbu Mangadevvi, who earlier made Solo Brathuke So Better, wrote the story and dialogues; the screenplay is by Vipparthi Madhu with Viswanetra, according to The Hindu. Vishal Chandrasekhar composed the music, Richard M. Nathan shot the film and Chota K. Prasad edited it.

What critics said

The New Indian Express called it formulaic but with its moments, praising Allari Naresh, the supporting cast and Vishal Chandrasekhar’s songs and score, while finding the second half hit-and-miss. The Hindu was harsher: Allari Naresh is the saving grace of a directionless, over-the-top film, with Rao Ramesh and Rohini standing out among the supporting actors.
