Devara: Part 1 is a 2024 Telugu-language action drama written and directed by Koratala Siva and produced by Yuvasudha Arts and N. T. R. Arts. N. T. Rama Rao Jr. plays a dual role, alongside Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Prakash Raj, Srikanth and Shine Tom Chacko. The first part of a planned two-film story, it marked the Telugu debuts of Khan and Kapoor. Released on 27 September 2024 to mixed reviews, it was a commercial success.

Story

In 1996, police hunting an arms dealer’s brother go undercover to the coastal settlements known as the Red Sea villages, where an old man begins to tell them a story from twelve years earlier. In 1984 the villagers made their living smuggling cargo off merchant ships at night. Devara, chieftain of one village, and his fellow leader Bhaira are among the smugglers, until Devara learns what they have really been carrying and turns against the trade. His change of heart sets him against the other chieftains, and the feud that follows shapes the coast for years. The film leaves its larger questions for the second part.

Cast

  • N. T. Rama Rao Jr. in a dual role, including Devara
  • Saif Ali Khan as an antagonist
  • Janhvi Kapoor as the female lead
  • Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shine Tom Chacko, Meera Jasmine, Murali Sharma, Kalaiyarasan and Narain
  • Shruti Marathe as Devara’s wife

Development

A project called NTR30, Rama Rao Jr.’s 30th film as a lead, was first linked to Trivikram Srinivas, but in April 2021 it was announced as his second film with Koratala Siva after Janatha Garage (2016). It was delayed by Siva’s work on Acharya and the actor’s on RRR; after Acharya failed, Siva reworked the script. The film was launched in Hyderabad on 23 March 2023, the title Devara was announced in May 2023, and that October Siva said the story would be split into two parts. Several actresses turned down the female lead before Janhvi Kapoor, in her first South Indian film, was confirmed; Saif Ali Khan said speaking Telugu made him feel like a newcomer.

Filming

Principal photography began in Hyderabad on 1 April 2023 and ended in August 2024, with shooting in Hyderabad, Shamshabad, Visakhapatnam, Goa and Krabi in Thailand. Much of the action was filmed in a large purpose-built water tank with wave machines, and Rama Rao Jr. trained with expert swimmers for the underwater sequences. Because of leaks, later schedules were shot on closed sets. The crew included composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer R. Rathnavelu, editor A. Sreekar Prasad and production designer Sabu Cyril, and a large group of visual effects studios, including Nandamuri Kalyan Ram‘s company, worked on the film.

Release and box office

Devara: Part 1 was released worldwide in standard, IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and other formats. Despite mixed reviews it opened strongly, and according to the source it grossed between ₹380 and ₹521 crore against a budget of ₹250–300 crore, making it the third highest-grossing Telugu film of 2024.

Awards

The film won SIIMA Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Playback Singer (Female) and Best Lyricist.

What critics said

The article describes mixed reviews: praise for the visuals, music, action, production values and performances, and criticism of a weak, predictable story and a forced cliffhanger.

  • ABP Live (Mahpara Kabir) called it a gripping action drama, with Jr NTR strong in two roles and Saif Ali Khan shining as the antagonist.
  • Bollywood Hungama found a weak second half offset by a terrific first half and crowd-pleasing action.
  • The Times of India (Paul Nicodemus) called it “visually stunning but narratively underwhelming”.
  • Firstpost (Lachmi Deb Roy) praised the two male leads but felt Janhvi Kapoor was given only an ornamental role.
  • Rediff (Sukanya Verma) saw its violence-to-end-violence hero as pure fan fantasy.
  • Times Now (Sashidhar Adivi) felt tighter writing in the second half would have helped.
  • OTTplay (Avad Mohammed) found the drama weak and the build-up to the sequel half-baked.
  • India Today (K. Janani) praised the performances of Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan.

Box office: the article reports an opening-day worldwide gross of ₹140–172 crore and ₹250 crore globally over the opening weekend.
