Jai Lava Kusa is a 2017 Telugu-language action drama written by Kona Venkat, directed by K. S. Ravindra (Bobby Kolli) and produced by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram under N. T. R. Arts. N. T. Rama Rao Jr. plays triplets Jai, Lava and Kusa, alongside Raashii Khanna, Nivetha Thomas and Ronit Roy, with Tamannaah in a special appearance. Released on 21 September 2017 on more than 4,000 screens, it was a commercial success.
Story
Identical triplets Jai, Lava and Kusa are raised by their uncle after their mother’s death. Jai, the eldest, has a severe stammer and is pushed aside while his brothers receive all the praise, and in a fit of anger he sets fire to the stage during their performance and flees. Twenty years later the three lead very different lives: Kusa is a petty thief, Lava a mild-mannered bank manager, and Jai a feared criminal known as Ravan. When their paths cross again, Jai’s resentment threatens to wreck his brothers’ lives.

Development
After Janatha Garage, Rama Rao Jr.’s next film, #NTR27, was first announced with Vakkantham Vamsi and then linked to Anil Ravipudi, before Kalyan Ram announced on 26 December 2016 that K. S. Ravindra would direct it on a large scale. Chota K. Naidu replaced the original cinematographer, Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, and the prosthetics expert Vance Hartwell, whose credits include the Lord of the Rings trilogy, was brought in to create the looks for the three characters.
Filming
The film was formally launched on 10 February at N. T. R. Arts’ new office, with V. V. Vinayak directing the first shot. Shooting took place largely in Hyderabad, including on a ₹2 crore set at Ramoji Film City, with a schedule in Pune where Rama Rao Jr. changed costumes 42 times for 13 scenes in a single day. Filming was delayed while he hosted the first season of Bigg Boss Telugu and wrapped in September 2017.
Release and reception
Released ahead of Dussehra, on the first day of Navratri, it was the second widest Telugu release after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and the biggest of the star’s career. Reviews were mixed to positive, with particular praise for Rama Rao Jr.’s triple role and for the writing. According to the source it collected ₹150–175 crore worldwide, and it was screened in the Best of Asia section of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
