Kingdom is a 2025 Indian Telugu-language spy action thriller written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. It was produced by Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas. Vijay Deverakonda stars alongside Satyadev and Bhagyashri Borse. It was released on 31 July 2025 to mixed reviews and, according to the source, grossed ₹82.02 crore worldwide, underperforming at the box office.

Story

A troubled police officer is sent undercover on a case that forces him to face his past. In 1991, Suri, a young and hot-headed constable who was separated from his elder brother Siva as a child, is recruited by a RAW handler for a secret mission. His task is to infiltrate Divi, a heavily guarded island off Sri Lanka. A prologue set in 1920 Srikakulam, in which tribal people try to stop a British massacre linked to gold mining, sets up a prophecy about a descendant of their tribe.

Development

Tinnanuri first took the script to Ram Charan while Charan was working on Acharya. That version was announced in October 2021 under the working title RC15, but it was shelved the following year. Tinnanuri then pitched the same story to Vijay Deverakonda. The new project was announced on 13 January 2023 under the working title VD12. In January 2025 the producers said the story would be told in two parts, and the title Kingdom was revealed on 12 February 2025.

Filming

Shooting began in Hyderabad in June 2023 but was delayed by Deverakonda’s commitments to Kushi and The Family Star. It resumed in Visakhapatnam in April 2024, then moved to Sri Lanka and on to Kothamangalam, Thandikudi, Nagercoil and Kerala. Deverakonda suffered a minor shoulder injury on set in November 2024. Girish Gangadharan and Jomon T. John handled the cinematography, and Naveen Nooli edited the film.

Music

Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack, his second film with Tinnanuri after Jersey and his first with Deverakonda. Aditya Music acquired the audio rights. The singles “Hridayam Lopala” and “Anna Antene” were released in May and July 2025.

Release

The film was first set for March 2025 and was postponed several times before it came out worldwide on 31 July 2025 in Telugu, with dubbed versions in Tamil and Hindi. N. T. Rama Rao Jr. voiced the Telugu teaser, Suriya the Tamil one and Ranbir Kapoor the Hindi one. Netflix began streaming the film on 27 August 2025, in a version that dropped a carnival fight sequence to tighten the pace.

Reception and aftermath

Critics acknowledged the film’s scale and ambition. However, many reviews found it emotionally distant, unfocused and reliant on familiar ideas, with ratings ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 out of 5. Its portrayal of Sri Lankan Tamils drew criticism from Tamil audiences, leading to calls online for a boycott in Tamil Nadu. Tinnanuri had planned a wider Kingdom universe, including a streaming prequel and a second part. After the lukewarm response, the sequel was shelved.
