Bobby Simha (born Jayasimha, 6 November 1983) is an Indian actor who works mainly in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. After small parts in Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi and Pizza (2012), he drew notice as a kidnapper in Soodhu Kavvum and a comic villain in Neram, and won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing the Madurai gangster Assault Sethu in Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda (2014). In Telugu he played the villain in Waltair Veerayya (2023).
Early life
Simha was born into a Telugu family in Secunderabad. The family comes from Mopidevi in Krishna district, where he went to a Telugu-medium school, Priyadarshini Vidyalayam, before they moved to Kodaikanal in 1995. He attended Pioneer College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore. At a 2005 event in Coimbatore, Sundar C and E. Ramdoss suggested he try acting; he later moved to Chennai, supporting himself with jobs in marketing, insurance and outsourcing while he looked for roles.
Short films and early roles
After an uncredited role in Maya Kannadi (2007), he was given a small part by Balaji Mohan in Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi. Through the short-film maker Manikandan he met Karthik Subbaraj, and the two made several short films together before Subbaraj cast him in his feature debut, Pizza.
Jigarthanda
He played Pagalavan in Soodhu Kavvum (2013) and the antagonist in the bilingual Neram. For Jigarthanda, he met real gangsters to study their behaviour and tanned his skin in the midday sun. Critics called his performance menacing and funny by turns, and it won him the National Film Award, the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize. Film Companion later listed it among the 100 greatest performances of the decade.
Lead and supporting roles
The success of Jigarthanda brought lead roles, though several did not do well. Urumeen (2015) was his first film as a solo action hero, and he also appeared in Bangalore Naatkal, Ko 2, Iraivi and Thiruttu Payale 2. He played the villain in Saamy Square (2018) and shared the screen with Rajinikanth in Petta (2019).
Telugu and recent work
In Telugu he played the antagonist opposite Ravi Teja in Disco Raja (2020), appeared in Edaina Jaragocchu and Ammu (2022), and played the villain opposite Chiranjeevi in Waltair Veerayya. He also appeared in Karthik Subbaraj’s Mahaan (2022), made a cameo in the Kannada film 777 Charlie, and played a CBI officer in S. Shankar‘s Indian 2 (2024).
He married his Urumeen co-star Reshmi Menon on 22 April 2016; they have a daughter and a son.
