Trivikram Srinivas (born Akella Naga Srinivasa Sarma on 7 November 1971) is an Indian film director and screenwriter in Telugu cinema. Known for his witty dialogue, humour and philosophical themes, he is among the highest-paid directors in Indian cinema. Audiences call him “Maatala Maantrikudu” (Wizard of Words) and “Guruji”. He has won six Nandi Awards for Best Dialogue Writer and two Filmfare Awards for Best Director, and received the B. N. Reddy National Award in 2015.
Early life
Trivikram was born in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh. He loved films as a boy and thought of becoming a director at 14, but it seemed impractical given his family’s finances. After a B.Sc at D.N.R. College in Bhimavaram, he completed a two-year M.Sc in nuclear physics at Andhra University in 15 months and graduated with a gold medal. He then taught maths, physics and chemistry at a high school in Bhimavaram. At the request of his friend, the actor Sunil, he moved to Hyderabad and supported himself by giving tuition while looking for a way into films.
Writing career
He first used the pen name “Trivikram” for a short story, “Road”, published in Andhra Jyothi. He learned screenwriting over 20 months as an assistant to Posani Krishna Murali. He made his official debut as a writer with Swayamvaram (1999), a big commercial success. He then rewrote the Malayalam film Niram as Nuvve Kavali (2000), which became the highest grosser of its time and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He also wrote Chirunavvutho, Nuvvu Naaku Nachav, Manmadhudu and Malliswari.
Directing breakthrough
His directing debut, Nuvve Nuvve (2002), was acclaimed and won the silver Nandi Award for Best Feature Film. Athadu (2005), with Mahesh Babu, was a hit and became the first Telugu film released in Poland. Jalsa (2008), with Pawan Kalyan, was the highest-grossing Telugu film of its year. Khaleja (2010) underperformed at first but later gained a cult following.
Commercial peak
He directed Julai (2012) with Allu Arjun. Attarintiki Daredi (2013) became an industry hit even though a large part of it leaked online before release. S/O Satyamurthy (2015) grossed ₹90.5 crore according to the source. After the failure of Agnyaathavaasi, he bounced back with Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018), starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr.. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020) grossed over ₹250 crore.
Recent work and style
He wrote the screenplay and dialogue for the remakes Bheemla Nayak (2022) and Bro (2023). His third film with Mahesh Babu, Guntur Kaaram (2024), received negative reviews and failed commercially. His films are known for fast-paced repartee, humour, action, mythological references and themes of relationships. Critics note his habit of showing the same event twice from different points of view.
