Oh! Baby, released in full as O Baby! Yentha Sakkagunnave, is a 2019 Telugu-language fantasy comedy directed by B. V. Nandini Reddy. A remake of the 2014 South Korean film Miss Granny, directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, it stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Lakshmi as the younger and older versions of the same woman. The film was well reviewed, with particular praise for Samantha, and was a commercial success.
Story
Baby is a woman in her 70s who runs a canteen at a college, co-owned with her childhood friend Chanti. As a girl she dreamed of becoming a great singer, a dream that never came true, and she now pins her hopes on her grandson Rocky, a young musician. At home, though, her relationship with her daughter-in-law has broken down, and Baby ends up leaving the house, hurt and angry with her fate.
Wandering the streets, she steps into a mysterious photo studio hoping for one beautiful portrait of herself. When the picture is taken, she is transformed into her 24-year-old self. Taking a new name, Swathi, she joins Rocky’s band and gets a second chance at the life she missed, including the singing career she once wanted and a new romance. The price of that second chance, and what she chooses in the end, is left for the viewer.
Cast
- Lakshmi as Baby, the woman in her 70s
- Samantha Ruth Prabhu as her 24-year-old self
Naga Shaurya, Rajendra Prasad, Rao Ramesh and Teja Sajja play supporting roles, and Snigdha also appears.
Title and production
Pre-production began in November 2018 with costume selection for what was then an untitled film. It was first announced as O Baby with the tagline “Yentha Sakkagunnave”, and the full title O Baby! Yentha Sakkagunnave was confirmed in December 2018. The phrase comes from a song in Rangasthalam that describes the beauty of Samantha’s character in that film.
The film was produced by Sunitha Tati, People’s Media Factory and Suresh Productions. The film was written by Nandini Reddy and Lakshmi Bhupala. Principal photography began in December 2018 and wrapped in mid-May 2019.
Music
Mickey J. Meyer composed the music, and the soundtrack was released by Aditya Music.
Release
The first look, featuring Samantha, came out on 21 May 2019, followed by the teaser on 25 May and the theatrical trailer on 20 June. The film opened in India on 5 July 2019, together with a Tamil dubbed version, and had screenings in Kuwait and the United States a day earlier. Netflix became its official streaming partner.
Reception
Reviews were largely positive. The Times of India and Deccan Chronicle each gave it 3.5 out of 5, and The Indian Express gave it 3. The News Minute and Firstpost rated it 4 out of 5. Reviewers commended Nandini Reddy for making the Korean story her own, found the film both funny and moving, and singled out Samantha for convincingly playing an older woman inside a young body, though one review found parts of the later stretch a little melodramatic.
A Hindi remake titled Jabudani is in development with the producer Sajid Nadiadwala.
