Gopichand (Tottempudi Gopichand) is an Indian actor who works mainly in Telugu cinema, known for action films and called “Action Star” and “Macho Star” by fans. After a lead debut in Tholi Valapu (2001), he played the villain in Jayam (2002), which won him the Nandi Award for Best Villain, Nijam (2003) and Varsham (2004), before returning as a hero with Yagnam (2004).
He was born on 12 June 1979 in a village near Tangutur, Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, according to Wikipedia and Wikidata. He is the younger son of the filmmaker T. Krishna, who died when Gopichand was eight. He went to school in Ongole and at the Ramakrishna Mission school in Chennai, studied mechanical engineering in Russia, and then took a year-long dialogue modulation course to follow his father into films.
Career
Tholi Valapu failed, and he turned to negative roles in Jayam, its Tamil remake, Nijam and Varsham. He returned as a hero in Yagnam and Andhrudu (2005). Ranam (2006) was a commercial success, followed by Raraju (2006), Okkadunnadu and Lakshyam (2007), and Ontari and Souryam (2008). In Golimaar (2010) he played an encounter specialist inspired by the police officer Daya Nayak.
Mogudu and Wanted (2011) failed, but Chandra Sekhar Yeleti’s action-adventure Sahasam (2013) became his biggest success at the time, and Loukyam (2014) went further. Jil (2015), with Raashii Khanna, was followed by the unsuccessful Soukhyam (2015), Goutham Nanda and Oxygen (2017). Pantham (2018) was his 25th film, and he played a spy in Chanakya (2019).
Sampath Nandi’s sports action film Seetimaarr (2021), with Tamannaah, was well reviewed and a box-office success (India Today). The long-delayed Aaradugula Bullet also came out in 2021. Maruthi’s Pakka Commercial (2022) was followed by Ramabanam (2023), Bhimaa (2024) and Viswam (2024).
