Spyder is a 2017 action thriller written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss and produced by N. V. Prasad, shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil. It stars Mahesh Babu, S. J. Suryah and Rakul Preet Singh, and marked Mahesh Babu’s direct Tamil debut. Released on 27 September 2017, it drew mixed reviews and was a box office flop.
Story
Shiva is an Intelligence Bureau officer who has built a program to listen in on people’s calls and messages so that he can help those in trouble. Through it he falls for Charlie, a student he overhears, but his work takes over when a frightened call for help leads him to a string of killings and to a psychopath who thrives on others’ suffering. The cat-and-mouse hunt that follows drives the film.
Cast
- Mahesh Babu in the lead
- S. J. Suryah in a negative role, his first after years of lead parts
- Rakul Preet Singh as the female lead
- RJ Balaji as Shiva’s friend
- Bharath in a negative role
Development
Encouraged by the response to the Tamil dub of Srimanthudu, Mahesh Babu announced in November 2015 a bilingual with Murugadoss, the director’s first Telugu film since Stalin (2006). After the working titles Abhimanyudu and Sambhavami, the title Spyder was revealed on 18 March 2017. Parineeti Chopra was first signed as the heroine but became unavailable, and Rakul Preet Singh replaced her. It was S. J. Suryah’s second film with Mahesh Babu, whom he had directed in Naani. The Paruchuri Brothers wrote the Telugu dialogue.
Filming and music
Principal photography began on 29 July 2016 and wrapped in August 2017, with schedules in Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai and Vietnam. According to the art director, 98% of the film was shot in Chennai, with the backdrop changed to Hyderabad through computer graphics for the Telugu version. Mahesh Babu performed his own stunts. Santosh Sivan was the cinematographer, A. Sreekar Prasad the editor, and Harris Jayaraj composed the music, with Telugu lyrics by Ramajogayya Sastry.
Release
After several postponements, the film was released on 27 September 2017 in Telugu and Tamil with a Malayalam dub, on more than 800 screens in India, the widest Telugu release after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. According to the source it grossed ₹92–150 crore against a budget of ₹120 crore and was a flop.

What critics said
The article describes mixed reviews: praise for S. J. Suryah and Mahesh Babu, the action and the direction, and criticism of the screenwriting and pace.
- The Times of India (Sridhar Adivi) felt A. R. Murugadoss's writing does not deliver the thrills the promos promised; M. Suganth, in the same paper, felt the writing lets the film down entirely after a point.
- The Hindu (Y. Sunita Chowdary) said it starts well but the director's imagination goes overboard.
- Firstpost (Hemanth Kumar) called it a true action thriller that does not pander to expectations of a Mahesh Babu film.
- Hindustan Times (Karthik Keramalu) found it watchable for its two leads and its humane angle.
- India Today (S. Srivatsan) found it an unsatisfying star vehicle with pompous scenes.
Box office: the article reports ₹33 crore gross on the first day at the global box office.
