Arjun Reddy is a 2017 Telugu-language romantic drama written and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, in his first film as director. Vijay Deverakonda plays the title role of a gifted surgeon whose temper and drinking send him into a spiral after he loses the woman he loves, and Shalini Pandey plays her. Made on a small budget, the film was a critical and commercial success, won Deverakonda the Filmfare Award for Best Telugu Actor and was remade in Hindi and twice in Tamil. It also drew criticism for its treatment of self-destruction and substance abuse.

Story

Arjun Reddy Deshmukh is a brilliant but volatile house surgeon at a medical college in Mangalore, known on campus as much for his rages as for his marks. After a violent brawl following a football match, he is on the point of leaving the college when he meets Preethi Shetty, a shy first-year student. He falls for her at once and becomes fiercely protective of her, and over time she returns his feelings.

The relationship survives years of distance while Arjun studies orthopaedics, but when he asks her family for their blessing, her father firmly opposes the match. Preethi is married to someone else, and Arjun, a wealthy and high-functioning alcoholic with anger problems, sets off on a self-destructive path. The film follows his downfall and the question of whether he can recover; this summary stops before those answers.

Cast

  • Vijay Deverakonda as Arjun Reddy Deshmukh
  • Shalini Pandey as Preethi Shetty
  • Rahul Ramakrishna, Jia Sharma, Sanjay Swaroop, Gopinath Bhat, Kamal Kamaraju and Kanchana in supporting roles

Development

Vanga had given up studying physiotherapy and worked as an assistant director on the 2010 Telugu film Kedi. The story of Arjun Reddy was partly inspired by his own years as a physiotherapy student. He spent two years writing the script and then four to five years trying to find a backer, as producers were unwilling to fund it. In the end his brother, Pranay Reddy Vanga, agreed to produce it through his company, Bhadrakali Pictures, with Pranay and their father investing equally.

Production

Principal photography began on 20 June 2016 in Hyderabad and took 86 working days. The film was also shot in Mangalore, Dehradun and New Delhi, with some filming in Italy. Raj Thota was the cinematographer and Shashank Mali the editor. Radhan composed the songs and Harshvardhan Rameshwar the background score.

Release and box office

The film was made on a budget of ₹5–5.15 crore and was released worldwide on 25 August 2017. According to the source, it grossed ₹51 crore globally, with a distributor share of ₹25.5 crore, making it a clear box-office success.

Reception and awards

Critics widely acclaimed the film, while some objected to how it handled self-destruction and substance abuse. At the 65th Filmfare Awards South it received six nominations, including Best Telugu Film and Best Telugu Director for Vanga. Its one win was Best Telugu Actor for Deverakonda.

Remakes

The story was retold three times in other languages:

  • Kabir Singh (2019), in Hindi
  • Adithya Varma (2019), in Tamil
  • Varmaa (2020), a second Tamil version
