DJ: Duvvada Jagannadham is a 2017 Telugu-language action comedy directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations. Allu Arjun plays the title role, alongside Pooja Hegde, Rao Ramesh, Subbaraju, Murali Sharma, Vennela Kishore, Posani Krishna Murali, Tanikella Bharani and Chandra Mohan. Released on 23 June 2017 to mixed reviews, it grossed over ₹150 crore according to the source and was one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2017.
Story
Duvvada Jagannadham Sastri is a mild-mannered cook from a traditional family of caterers in Vijayawada. Secretly, with the help of a police mentor, he is also DJ, a vigilante who punishes wrongdoers. When a family tragedy leads him to a massive real-estate fraud run by a powerful builder, Royyala Naidu, DJ sets out to bring the people behind it to account, while Jagannadham falls for Pooja, the daughter of a minister tied to the same circle.
Cast
- Allu Arjun as Duvvada Jagannadham, known as DJ
- Pooja Hegde as the female lead
- Rao Ramesh as Royyala Naidu
- Subbaraju, Murali Sharma, Vennela Kishore, Posani Krishna Murali, Tanikella Bharani and Chandra Mohan
Production
After Sarrainodu, Allu Arjun announced in June 2016 that his next film would be with Harish Shankar and producer Dil Raju. Shruti Haasan and Kajal Aggarwal were approached before Pooja Hegde was cast. Rao Ramesh’s character was modelled on one played by his father, Rao Gopal Rao, in Aa Okkati Adakku (1992). The title was announced on 28 August 2016, and filming ran from November 2016 to May 2017, including in Abu Dhabi, drawn by the emirate’s film rebate, and at Belur, where the shoot was briefly stalled over a temple dispute. Ayananka Bose was the cinematographer.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad composed the five-song soundtrack, his seventh film with Allu Arjun. Songs such as “DJ Saranam Bhaje Bhaje” and “Gudilo Badilo Madilo Vodilo” were popular, and “Seeti Maar” was later remixed for Salman Khan’s Radhe.
Release and reception
Postponed twice, the film was released on 23 June 2017, over the Ramzan weekend, with dubbed versions in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Bengali. Critics found it bloated and formulaic, with The Hindu comparing it to Shankar’s Gentleman, but most praised Allu Arjun’s energy and dancing. It was nonetheless a major commercial success.

What critics said
Reviews cited in the article credited Allu Arjun's energy and dancing, but most critics found the film bloated and its story familiar.
- The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) felt the songs and 156-minute length sap its tempo, and compared its premise with Shankar's Gentleman.
- India Today (Srivatsan) found the jokes flat and the story half-baked, though Allu Arjun is effective in parts.
- The Indian Express (Manoj Kumar R) called it a by-the-book commercial entertainer that works to some extent.
- Firstpost (Hemanth Kumar) found it loud but noted that Allu Arjun “still dances like a dream”.
