Brahmotsavam (meaning “Festival of Brahma”) is a 2016 Telugu-language family drama written and directed by Srikanth Addala and co-produced by Prasad V. Potluri’s PVP Cinema with G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment. It stars Mahesh Babu, Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyaraj, Rao Ramesh, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Pranitha Subhash. Released on 20 May 2016, it drew negative reviews and was a box office bomb.
Story
Chantibabu, a successful paint businessman in Vijayawada, is respected by his family and community, and his large extended family, including his wife’s stepbrothers who work with him, celebrate every occasion together. His son, Babu, is a charming bachelor who runs the company. But beneath the festivities the eldest stepbrother nurses envy and old grievances, and when those tensions finally surface, Babu is left to try to heal the family.
Cast
- Mahesh Babu in the lead
- Sathyaraj as the hero’s father
- Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Pranitha Subhash in the three female leads
- Rao Ramesh, Jayasudha, Tanikella Bharani and Brahmaji
Development and casting
Addala’s collaboration with Mahesh Babu was reported in October 2014, and he spent more than a year on the script; Mahesh Babu signed on before finishing Srimanthudu, regardless of how Addala’s previous film Mukunda had fared. The film was launched on 31 May 2015 and was first planned as a Telugu–Tamil bilingual, though that plan was dropped. Rakul Preet Singh was originally among the heroines but was replaced by Samantha because of scheduling conflicts. Sathyaraj was chosen partly to appeal to Tamil audiences.
Filming and music
Principal photography began in August 2015, mostly at Ramoji Film City, with shooting also in Ooty, Chennai and Varanasi, and wrapped in March 2016. R. Rathnavelu was the cinematographer and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao the editor. Mickey J. Meyer composed the songs and Gopi Sundar the score.
Release and box office
The film opened on 20 May 2016 to negative reviews. According to the source it grossed only ₹63.70 crore against a budget of ₹75 crore, making it a box office bomb.
