Srimanthudu (meaning “Wealthy Man”) is a 2015 Telugu-language action drama written and directed by Koratala Siva and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment. It stars Mahesh Babu, Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu and Rajendra Prasad. A story about a billionaire’s heir who adopts his family’s ancestral village, it was a critical and commercial success, and after its release a number of actors, officials and politicians announced plans to adopt villages in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Story

Harsha Vardhan is the sole heir to his father Ravikanth’s huge business empire. At a party he meets Charuseela, who wants to use technology to help Devarakota, the remote village in Uttarandhra she comes from, and he enrols in a course on rural development. When Harsha learns that his own family’s roots lie in Devarakota, he travels there, adopts the village and sets about improving its lives and infrastructure. His work brings him up against the local strongman Sashi and his brother Venkata Ratnam, a minister, and also uncovers why his father left the village long ago.

Cast

  • Mahesh Babu as Harsha Vardhan
  • Shruti Haasan as Charuseela
  • Jagapathi Babu as Ravikanth, Harsha’s father

Development

UTV Motion Pictures announced the project in October 2013 as its first Telugu production, but later withdrew over differences with Siva, and Mythri Movie Makers became the main investor. Mahesh Babu co-produced the film through his own company, taking a share of the profits instead of a fee to keep the budget in check, and took part in the story discussions. Shruti Haasan was cast as the heroine; Siva named her character Charuseela after the lyrics of a song of that name. Impressed by his work in Legend, Siva cast Jagapathi Babu as the father.

Production

The film was launched at Ramanaidu Studios, Hyderabad, on 11 August 2014, and principal photography ran from 7 November 2014 in Pune until mid-June 2015, mostly in and around Hyderabad with some portions in Tamil Nadu and Malaysia. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, R. Madhi was the cinematographer and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao edited the film. The title was confirmed on 29 May 2015.

Release and box office

Distributed worldwide by Eros International, Srimanthudu was released on 7 August 2015 alongside its Tamil dubbed version, Selvandhan. It received positive reviews, and according to the source it grossed over ₹200 crore on a budget of ₹60–70 crore, making it the second highest-grossing Telugu film of all time at the time of its initial release.

What critics said

The article describes positive reviews for Mahesh Babu's performance and for Koratala Siva's writing of a socially conscious commercial film.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) called it a “star-driven film with a strong plot that's worth a watch”, less realistic than Swades but engaging.
  • Sify liked the mix of Mahesh's performance, Shruti Haasan's charisma and a fine story, without a separate comedy track.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) likened it to a slightly dumbed-down Swades, but said it achieves more than most big Tollywood potboilers of the decade.
  • Bangalore Mirror (Sethumadhavan N) credited Siva's writing for keeping it engaging throughout.
  • Deccan Chronicle (Suresh Kavirayani) called it a good emotional drama with an excellent Mahesh Babu.
  • Outlook India (Hemanth Kumar C. R.) praised it for not being built around its star's image, calling it sensible and full of heart.
  • IBNLive (Karthik Keramalu) placed it a notch above routine commercial films.
