Amar Akbar Anthony is a 2018 Telugu-language action comedy co-written and directed by Srinu Vaitla and produced by Naveen Yerneni, Y. Ravi Shankar and Mohan Cherukuri under Mythri Movie Makers. It stars Ravi Teja and Ileana D’Cruz, with Vikramjeet Virk and Abhimanyu Singh, and was the fourth collaboration between Ravi Teja and Srinu Vaitla. Unrelated to the 1977 Hindi film of the same name, it was released on 16 November 2018, was panned and failed at the box office.
Story
In New York, Amar is released from prison and begins a campaign of revenge, killing a businessman to recover a ring. What he does not know is that he has multiple personality disorder: depending on what triggers him, he becomes Akbar, who goes out of his way to help the needy, or Mark Anthony, a calm doctor, and these other selves keep getting in the way of his plans. He also meets Pooja, a young woman who has the same disorder.
Cast
- Ravi Teja in the lead
- Ileana D’Cruz as the female lead
- Vikramjeet Virk and Abhimanyu Singh
- Laya, in a comeback role
Production
Ravi Teja and Srinu Vaitla, who had earlier made Nee Kosam, Venky and Dubai Seenu, reunited in June 2017, and the title was confirmed that November. Anu Emmanuel was first cast as the heroine but left over dates in May 2018 and was replaced by Ileana D’Cruz, returning to Telugu films after Devudu Chesina Manushulu (2012). Laya, who had settled in America, was chosen because most of the film is set there. Principal photography began in New York on 1 April 2018. S. Thaman composed the music.
Release
Vaitla first aimed for a Dasara release, and the film was announced for 5 October 2018 before being moved to 16 November 2018.
Reception
Critics were unimpressed. The Times of India called it old wine in a new bottle, Cinema Express found it lacklustre despite having the ingredients of good commercial cinema, The Indian Express gave it one star, and Firstpost said its jokes fell flat and its attempt to be both funny and thrilling rarely worked.
