Krishnarjuna Yudham (transl. War of Krishna and Arjuna) is a 2018 Indian Telugu-language action comedy written and directed by Merlapaka Gandhi and produced by Sahu Garapati and Harish Peddi under Shine Screens. Nani plays a dual role, his third after Janda Pai Kapiraju and Gentleman, opposite Anupama Parameswaran and Rukshar Dhillon. It opened worldwide on 12 April 2018 to mixed reviews and was a box-office failure.

Story

Krishna, a happy-go-lucky young man from Akkurthi village in Chittoor, and Arjun, a flirtatious rock star in Prague, look exactly alike. Krishna falls for Riya, a doctor and the village president’s granddaughter. Arjun falls for Subbalakshmi, a wildlife photographer who is put off by his flirting. Both women end up in Hyderabad, where they are kidnapped by a trafficking gang, and the two lookalikes set out to find them.

Production

Part of the film was shot in Prague in the Czech Republic.

Music

Hiphop Tamizha composed the music, their second Telugu film after Dhruva. The songs range from the rock number “Turn This Party Up” and the Chittoor-dialect folk song “Dhaari Choodu” to the melody “I Wanna Fly” and the break-up songs “Ela Ela” and “Urime Manase”.

Release and box office

Dil Raju acquired the distribution rights for the Telugu states. According to the source, the film earned ₹35 crore from its worldwide theatrical rights before release and opened with ₹4.58 crore in the Telugu states. However, it recovered only ₹14.50 crore against a budget of ₹30 crore. That made it Nani’s first box-office disaster since 2014.

Reception

Critics praised Nani’s performance and the “Dhaari Choodu” song but faulted the formulaic story and the weak second half. The Times of India gave it 2.5 out of 5 and felt it failed to make a point about human trafficking. Firstpost gave it 2 and said it struggled to find its rhythm.
