Rabhasa (transl. Chaos) is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language action comedy written and directed by Santosh Srinivas and produced by Bellamkonda Suresh and Bellamkonda Ganesh Babu under Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Productions. It stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Samantha, Pranitha Subhash and Brahmanandam, with Nassar, Jayasudha and Sayaji Shinde in supporting roles. Released on 29 August 2014 to mixed reviews, it was, according to the source, a commercial failure.
Story
Karthik, back from studying in the United States, promises to marry his uncle Dhanunjay’s daughter Indu, as his mother wished, after a family feud has split the two households. He joins Indu’s college to win her over but mistakes another girl, Bhagyam, for Dhanunjay’s daughter. When he finds the real Indu, she already loves someone else. A risky attempt to help a stranger then lands him in serious trouble.
Development
The film grew out of plans for a sequel to Kandireega. That project was dropped, and the producers made a new city-set film with NTR Jr. and Santosh Srinivas instead. Samantha, in the second film of a three-film deal with the producer, was cast as the heroine, her third film with NTR Jr. The film was launched on 13 February 2013. Other titles were considered, but the producers, guided by numerology, registered Rabhasa in May 2014.
Filming
Principal photography began on 2 August 2013 at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad. Most of it was shot at studios in and around Hyderabad, with substantial portions in Jaipur and Pollachi and a song in Switzerland. Filming ended on 23 July 2014. Director V. V. Vinayak provided voice-overs for a few sequences.
Music and crew
S. Thaman composed the music. Shyam K. Naidu was the cinematographer, Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao the editor and A. S. Prakash the art director.
Release and reception
The film opened worldwide on 29 August 2014, the eve of Vinayaka Chathurthi, and most critics saw it as a regular mass entertainer.
