Ram Charan (Konidela Ram Charan) is an Indian actor, film producer and entrepreneur who works mainly in Telugu cinema. Known in the media as “Mega Power Star”, he broke through with S. S. Rajamouli’s Magadheera (2009) and gained international attention with Rajamouli’s RRR (2022), his highest-grossing film. His awards include four Filmfare Awards and two Nandi Awards.

He was born on 27 March 1985 in Madras (now Chennai), the son of actor Chiranjeevi and Surekha, according to Wikipedia, citing Filmfare, and Wikidata. His maternal grandfather was the comic actor Allu Ramalingaiah. Vels University in Chennai gave him an honorary doctorate in April 2024 (Hindustan Times).

Career

His debut, Puri Jagannadh’s action film Chirutha (2007), was a box-office hit; Rediff found him “quite promising”, with dance and action his strengths, and he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South and a Nandi Special Jury Award. In Magadheera he played two roles, the warrior Kala Bhairava and Harsha. The film was the highest-grossing Telugu film of its time and brought his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu.

Bhaskar’s romance Orange (2010) did poorly at the box office but later gained a cult following. Rachcha (2012), in which he played the gambler “Betting Raj”, ran 100 days in 38 centres, and V. V. Vinayak’s Naayak (2013) was a commercial success despite mixed reviews. He played a third double role in Yevadu (2014), then appeared in Krishna Vamsi’s family drama Govindudu Andarivadele (2014) and Srinu Vaitla’s Bruce Lee – The Fighter (2015).

Surender Reddy’s Dhruva (2016), a remake of the Tamil Thani Oruvan, was a commercial success. Sukumar’s Rangasthalam (2018), in which he played the semi-deaf villager Chitti Babu, was the year’s highest-grossing Telugu film and won him a second Filmfare Best Actor award and the SIIMA Best Actor award. Vinaya Vidheya Rama (2019) received negative reviews, and he wrote an open apology to his fans.

In RRR he played Alluri Sitarama Raju opposite N. T. Rama Rao Jr. The role earned a Critics’ Choice Super Award nomination for Best Actor in an Action Movie (The Hollywood Reporter), a third Filmfare Best Actor award and an honour at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in 2024 (The Hindu). He also appeared with his father in Acharya (2022). S. Shankar’s Game Changer (2025) received mixed reviews and underperformed. Buchi Babu Sana’s sports drama Peddi was released on 4 June 2026.

His Konidela Production Company, launched in 2016, produced his father’s Khaidi No. 150 (2017) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019). In 2023 he co-founded V Mega Pictures with Vikram Reddy of UV Creations.
