Surender Reddy is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in Telugu cinema. His debut, Athanokkade (2005), won the Nandi Award for Best First Film of a Director, and he went on to direct Ashok (2006), Kick (2009), Oosaravelli (2011), Race Gurram (2014), Dhruva (2016) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019). Race Gurram won him the SIIMA Award for Best Director – Telugu.
Early life
Reddy was born and raised in Machanapalli village in Karimnagar district, Telangana, the fourth of six children in an affluent family; his father, Veera Reddy, was the village sarpanch. He left his degree unfinished and moved to Hyderabad to work in films, starting as an assistant director on Preminchedi Endukamma (1999).
Athanokkade and Kick
His first film, Athanokkade, starring and produced by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, was a critical and commercial success. He followed it with Ashok, starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Sameera Reddy. The action comedy Kick, with Ravi Teja and Ileana D’Cruz, was a major hit. Apart from Athanokkade, all his films have been based on stories by Vakkantham Vamsi.
Race Gurram
Race Gurram, his first film with Allu Arjun, co-starring Shruti Haasan, was launched in October 2012 and released on 11 April 2014. It became Allu Arjun’s first film to gross over ₹100 crore and the highest-grossing Telugu film of that year. For it he brought back Shaam, whom he had worked with on Kick and Oosaravelli.
Kick 2 and Dhruva
He reunited with Ravi Teja for the sequel Kick 2 (2015), produced by Kalyan Ram; it had Ravi Teja’s biggest opening day to that point but failed at the box office. He then directed Dhruva (2016).
Sye Raa and Agent
His historical epic Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019) starred Chiranjeevi and was produced by Ram Charan. His film Agent, with Akhil Akkineni, was released on 28 April 2023 and was a commercial disaster.
