Ramayya Vasthavayya (meaning “Rama, you will come”) is a 2013 Telugu-language action comedy drama written and directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Dil Raju. It stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Shruti Haasan and Samantha. Released on 11 October 2013, it drew negative reviews for its story, pace and predictability, and was commercially unsuccessful.

Story

Nandu is a cheerful student in Hyderabad who falls for Akarsha and tries every trick to win her, including getting close to her grandmother. When the family travels for Akarsha’s sister’s wedding, it emerges that the bride’s father is a powerful and dangerous man, Nagabhushanam, and that Nandu has a hidden mission linked to his own past.

Cast

  • N. T. Rama Rao Jr. as Nandu, a college student
  • Samantha as Akarsha, the main female lead
  • Shruti Haasan in a short, special role
  • Mukesh Rishi as Nagabhushanam; P. Ravi Shankar as the main villain
  • Tanikella Bharani as Nandu’s father; Vidyullekha Raman as his neighbour Asha Jyothi; Hamsa Nandini in a song

Development

Harish Shankar announced the project in July 2012, and Dil Raju took over as producer under Sri Venkateswara Creations. The muhurtham was held on 18 October 2012. P. Ravi Shankar was cast as the villain on the strength of his negative roles in Kannada films. Chota K. Naidu was the cinematographer, Gautham Raju the editor and S. Thaman the composer.

Filming

Principal photography began in Hyderabad on 4 January 2013, with wedding scenes at Ramoji Film City and a climax shot in August 2013 with 1,000 junior artists. Songs were planned in Spain, and filming ended with a song at Annapurna Studios.

Release and reception

Planned for 27 September 2013, the film was postponed to 11 October because of political unrest in the state and opened on 1,200 screens with an A certificate. The Times of India praised Rama Rao Jr.’s stylish performance and the fun first half but found the second half disappointing. According to Harish Shankar’s profile, it earned a worldwide share of ₹309 million. Its later YouTube release drew a strong response.
