Thagubothu Ramesh (Ramilla Ramesh) is an Indian actor and comedian in Telugu cinema. He is known for playing drunk characters, which earned him the nickname “Thagubothu” (drunkard). He won the Nandi Award for Best Male Comedian, and his notable films include Mahatma (2009), Ala Modalaindi (2011), Pilla Zamindar (2011) and Ishq (2012).
Early life
Ramesh was born in Godavarikhani, in Peddapalli district, Telangana. His father worked for Singareni Collieries Company. As a child he learned to make people laugh by impersonating others, and he grew into a skilled mimic who performed shows in his town.
Influences
Ramesh names the Bengali comedian Keshto Mukherjee, who was also famous for playing drunkards, as an inspiration.
Training
Before acting, he worked as a building supervisor for ten years. He decided to pursue acting in earnest and joined the Akkineni Film Institute in Hyderabad in 2005.
Film career
After graduating in 2006, he got a small role in Sukumar‘s Jagadam, his first feature film, and went on to act in about ten Telugu films. Through the actor Uttej he met director Krishna Vamsi, who cast him as a drunkard in Mahatma. That role became the turning point of his career.
Thagubothu Ramesh
His success in Mahatma led to another drunk role in B. V. Nandini Reddy‘s Ala Modalaindi. His performance as Gowtham, a software engineer who drinks too much, became very popular with audiences. From then on he was widely known as “Thagubothu Ramesh”. He won the 2013 Nandi Award for Best Male Comedian for Venkatadri Express.
