Kumari 21F is a 2015 Indian Telugu-language romantic drama written by Sukumar and directed by Palnati Surya Pratap. It stars Raj Tarun and Hebah Patel, and was Sukumar’s first film as a producer. Released in November 2015 to mostly positive reviews, it grossed ₹38 crore according to the source and was a commercial success.
Story
Siddhu is a chef in a middle-class colony who lives with his mother and dreams of working on a cruise liner in Singapore. He falls for Kumari, a struggling model from Mumbai who has just moved into the colony. Her bold, outspoken manner often confuses him, and when his friends suggest she has a past, his suspicions put their relationship to the test.
Development
Sukumar announced the project in October 2014, co-producing with Bandreddi Vijay Prasad and Thomas Reddy. The title refers to a 21-year-old woman called Kumari. He drew on a memory from his college days in Razole, where a young woman who went on a picnic with young men was unfairly branded “loose”. He described Kumari as an honest woman unafraid to express herself. Hebah Patel replaced the originally cast Sheena Bajaj after the makers saw her in Ala Ela.
Filming
Shooting began in December 2014 and took about 70 working days, with 60% of the film shot in the R&B colony in Malakpet, Hyderabad. R. Rathnavelu shot with limited equipment and mostly natural light, using digital low-light techniques. Neither he nor composer Devi Sri Prasad took any fee. The song “Bang Bang Bangkok” was filmed in Bangkok and choreographed by Prasad himself.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad composed the five songs, and Aditya Music released the album at Shilpakala Vedika on 30 October 2015.
Release and reception
The source gives both 19 and 20 November 2015 as the release date. The film opened on about 500 screens, clashing with Spectre. Critics praised the climax, the performances, especially Hebah Patel’s, and the screenplay, cinematography and music. It ranked as the twelfth highest-grossing Telugu film of the year and was remade in Kannada in 2018.
