The Warriorr is a 2022 Indian action drama directed by N. Lingusamy and produced by Srinivasa Chitturi under Srinivasa Silver Screen. It was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil. It stars Ram Pothineni and Krithi Shetty, both making their Tamil debuts, with Aadhi Pinisetty, Nadhiya and Akshara Gowda. It was released on 14 July 2022 to negative reviews and was a box-office failure.
Story
Satya, a young doctor, moves to Kurnool with his mother and sister to work at a government hospital. He discovers that a ruthless gangster, Guru, runs a medical racket making toxic saline that has killed children at the hospital. When Satya files a complaint against him, Guru has him brutally beaten, and Satya is forced to leave the city. The film follows his return two years later.
Development
Lingusamy planned a Telugu–Tamil bilingual in 2016 as his Telugu debut. He first approached Allu Arjun, and later cast Havish in 2019, but neither version went ahead. Ram Pothineni was announced on 18 February 2021, under the working title RAPO19, and the title The Warriorr was revealed in January 2022. Krithi Shetty was cast as the heroine in March 2021, and Aadhi Pinisetty as the main villain that July.
Filming and music
Scenes with Ram and Aadhi were filmed in both languages, while Krithi Shetty’s were shot only in Telugu and Nadhiya’s only in Tamil. Filming ran from 13 July 2021 to the end of May 2022, mainly in Hyderabad and Chennai. Sujith Vaassudev was the cinematographer and Naveen Nooli the editor. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music in his first film with Lingusamy, and the album was released by Aditya Music.
Release
According to the source, the film’s pre-release rights sold for ₹43.10 crore, the highest yet for a Ram Pothineni film. It opened on 14 July 2022, grossing ₹12.2 crore on its first day. The Telugu version began streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on 11 August 2022.
Reception
Reviews were largely negative. The Times of India gave it 3 out of 5 as a popcorn masala entertainer. Firstpost and The News Minute gave it 1.5 and India Today 1, calling it superficial and unoriginal. The Hindu and The Indian Express felt Lingusamy was repeating his old formula.
