Vakeel Saab (meaning “Mr Lawyer”) is a 2021 Telugu-language legal drama co-written and directed by Venu Sriram and produced by Dil Raju, Sirish and Boney Kapoor. A remake of the 2016 Hindi film Pink, it stars Pawan Kalyan, Nivetha Thomas, Anjali, Ananya Nagalla, Prakash Raj and Shruti Haasan. Released on 9 April 2021, it became a box office hit despite a pandemic lockdown shortly afterwards, and marked Pawan Kalyan’s return to films after Agnyaathavaasi.
Story
Pallavi, Zareena and Divya are independent working women sharing a home in Hyderabad. After a night that ends with the son of a powerful MP badly injured, the young man and his friends set out to punish them, and the police discourage them from complaining. When Pallavi herself ends up accused of a crime, a lawyer takes up the women’s case in a courtroom battle over consent and justice.
Cast
- Pawan Kalyan in the role played by Amitabh Bachchan in the original
- Nivetha Thomas, Anjali and Ananya Nagalla
- Prakash Raj
- Shruti Haasan in a cameo, in the flashback romance with Pawan Kalyan’s character
Development and filming
Venu Sriram turned to the remake after a project with Allu Arjun was put on hold, and Pawan Kalyan was announced on 2 November 2019 as his comeback after the 2019 elections, with dialogue by Trivikram Srinivas. The director said he stayed true to the original while adapting it to the star. Filming began in Hyderabad on 20 January 2020, was halted for six months by the pandemic, and was completed on 9 January 2021. P. S. Vinod was the cinematographer and Prawin Pudi the editor.
Music
S. Thaman composed the five-song soundtrack, his first film with Pawan Kalyan. The first single, “Maguva Maguva”, sung by Sid Sriram and released on Women’s Day 2020, passed 30 million views on YouTube.
Release and box office
The film opened on 9 April 2021. Benefit shows were cancelled and ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh were kept very low, and many screenings were halted days later by the second-wave lockdown. Even so, according to the source it grossed ₹137.65 crore worldwide, the second highest-grossing Telugu film of the year.
