Gang Leader (billed as Nani’s Gang Leader) is a 2019 Indian Telugu-language action comedy written and directed by Vikram Kumar and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. It stars Nani, Priyanka Mohan in her Telugu debut, Kartikeya, Lakshmi, Saranya Ponvannan, Shriya Kontham and Praanya P. Rao. Released on 13 September 2019, it was well received and a commercial success.
Story
A gang pulls off a ₹300 crore bank robbery, and then one member kills the other five and vanishes with the money. Five women, each of whom lost someone in the robbery’s violent aftermath, band together to find the killer. With no idea how to go about it, they turn to “Pencil” Parthasarathy, a struggling crime novelist known for lifting plots from foreign films, who sees a story in their quest.
Music
Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack, with lyrics by Anantha Sriram and Inno Genga. The promotional title track was later reused in the Tamil film Dharala Prabhu.
Release
The film was moved back from its planned late-August date and released on 13 September 2019. It was the last film Mohan Cherukuri (CVM) worked on with Mythri Movie Makers.
Reception
Reviews were generally positive. Behindwoods gave it 3 out of 5 and called it an inventive, wildly entertaining comedy with a fine ensemble. The Times of India, also at 3, felt it only partly succeeded. The Indian Express gave it 2.5 and credited Nani’s effortless presence for keeping it lively.
Awards
Kartikeya Gummakonda won the SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role – Telugu for his performance.
