Devadas is a 2018 Telugu-language action comedy directed by Sriram Adittya and produced by C. Ashwini Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies. It stars Nagarjuna, Nani, Aakanksha Singh and Rashmika Mandanna, with music by Mani Sharma. Inspired by the Malayalam film Bhargavacharitham Moonam Khandam (2006), itself drawing on Analyze This (1999), it was released on 27 September 2018 and underperformed despite a positive reception.
Story
Dr. Das, a gold-medallist surgeon, loses his job at a corporate hospital in Hyderabad and opens a clinic in a run-down charity hospital. When Deva, an elusive crime boss hunted by the police, turns up wounded, Das treats him without knowing who he is and, once he finds out, chooses not to report him. The gangster takes a liking to the naive, principled doctor, and an unlikely friendship grows between them, complicated by romances of their own and by Deva’s violent world.
Cast
- Nagarjuna and Nani in the lead roles
- Aakanksha Singh and Rashmika Mandanna
Production and music
Devadas was the first film to be shot on the Hyderabad Metro. Mani Sharma’s soundtrack, released on Aditya Music, was launched on 21 September 2018, the birthday of Akkineni Nageswara Rao; Sify found parts of it lacklustre while liking songs such as “Vaaru Veeru” and “Chettu Kinda Doctor”.
Release
The film opened on 27 September 2018, and was later dubbed into Tamil and, as Don Aur Doctor, into Hindi by Zee Studios in November 2019.
Reception
Critics generally enjoyed the comedy and the pairing of its two stars. The Times of India praised its humour and performances but found it too long with a weak climax; Sify felt the first half worked well while the second faltered; The Hindu criticised the characters but credited the director with making good use of his leads; and Deccan Chronicle called it the two stars’ show all the way. Despite this, the film underperformed at the box office.
