Krish Jagarlamudi (born Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi, 10 November 1978), known as Krish, is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works mainly in Telugu cinema, with Hindi and Tamil films as well. His debut Gamyam (2008) and the hyperlink film Vedam (2010) won wide acclaim, and his Second World War drama Kanche (2015) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He has also won two Filmfare Awards South.
Early life
Krish was born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He studied pharmacy and computer science in the United States and worked there briefly before returning to India to work in films full-time.
Gamyam and Vedam
His first film, Gamyam (2008), starred Allari Naresh, Sharwanand and Kamalinee Mukherjee, and was produced by his father, Saibabu Jagarlamudi, with family and friends after established producers turned him down. It was a big hit, won the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director, and is regarded by many as one of the greatest Telugu films. The anthology Vedam (2010), with Allu Arjun, Anushka Shetty and Manoj Manchu, won all four major awards at the 58th Filmfare Awards South, including a second Best Director award for Krish; it was only the second film to do so.
Remakes and Hindi debut
He remade Vedam in Tamil as Vaanam (2011), also well received, and directed Rana Daggubati and Nayanthara in Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (2012). His Hindi debut, Gabbar Is Back (2015), starred Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Shruti Haasan.
Period films
Kanche, a war film starring Varun Tej and set partly in Nazi Germany, was released on 22 October 2015 to positive reviews and did well at the box office. He then directed Nandamuri Balakrishna‘s 100th film, Gautamiputra Satakarni (2017), a commercial success. After starting work on Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019), he directed the two-part N. T. Rama Rao biopic NTR: Kathanayakudu and NTR: Mahanayakudu (2019) at Balakrishna’s request; both failed critically and commercially.
Recent projects
In 2020 he began filming the historical fiction Hari Hara Veera Mallu, about an outlaw, with Pawan Kalyan. He reunited with Anushka Shetty, his lead in Vedam and Vaanam, for her 50th film, Ghaati. He has also presented the film Dagudumootha Dandakor (2015).
