Temper is a 2015 Indian Telugu-language action drama co-written and directed by Puri Jagannadh from a story by Vakkantham Vamsi. It stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Kajal Aggarwal, Prakash Raj and Posani Krishna Murali, and was produced by Bandla Ganesh under Parameswara Art Productions. Released on 13 February 2015, it was a critical and commercial success and a major comeback for NTR Jr. after two box-office failures.
Story
Daya, an orphan, grows up believing a policeman’s life is easy money and becomes a corrupt sub-inspector. After a transfer to Visakhapatnam, he teams up with the local don, Waltair Vasu, and makes money on the side. Then a crime he had ignored comes back to him: a woman seeks justice for her murdered sister. Haunted by his own negligence, Daya resolves to bring the culprits to justice, whatever it costs him.
Development
Puri Jagannadh and NTR Jr. had tried to work together again ever since Andhrawala (2004). When Jagannadh was ready to begin, NTR Jr. asked him to hear an idea Vakkantham Vamsi had pitched to the actor years earlier. Jagannadh chose Vamsi’s script in May 2014. It was the first film he directed from a story he had not written himself. Kajal Aggarwal was cast as the heroine, her third film with NTR Jr. after Brindavanam and Baadshah. The title Temper was chosen from several options and announced on 19 November 2014.
Production
The film was launched on 1 August 2014 in Hyderabad, and shooting began the next day. Two strikes by the Film Federation halted work, but filming was completed by 31 January 2015, mainly in and around Hyderabad and Goa. According to the source, the budget was ₹35 crore. Shyam K. Naidu was the cinematographer and S. R. Sekhar the editor. Nora Fatehi replaced Shruti Haasan for a special song.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad was first announced as composer but was replaced. Anup Rubens composed the songs, and Mani Sharma composed the background score.
Reception and box office
Critics praised Jagannadh’s direction and the character of Daya. They also praised the performances of NTR Jr., which many considered one of his best, as well as Posani Krishna Murali and Prakash Raj. According to the source, the film grossed ₹74.3 crore, with a lifetime share of ₹43.1 crore. Its television premiere drew a TRP rating of 29.9, a record for a Telugu film.
Remakes
Temper was remade in Hindi as Simmba (2018) and in Tamil as Ayogya (2019).
