Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (transl. You Are an Interesting Man) is a 2015 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy written and directed by Maruthi and produced by Bunny Vasu under GA2 Pictures and UV Creations. It stars Nani and Lavanya Tripathi, with Murali Sharma, Ajay, Naresh, Sithara and Vennela Kishore in supporting roles. Released on 4 September 2015, it was well reviewed and a major hit, grossing over ₹50.05 crore according to the source.
Story
Lucky is a junior plant scientist so absent-minded that he forgets whatever he is doing the moment something else catches his attention. His condition has already cost him one arranged match. Then he falls for Nandana, a gentle Kuchipudi dance teacher, and has to keep hiding his forgetfulness from her.
Cast
- Nani as Lakkaraju, known as Lucky
- Lavanya Tripathi as Nandana, a Kuchipudi dancer
- Murali Sharma as Nandana’s conservative father
- Naresh and Sithara as Lucky’s parents
- Vennela Kishore, Ajay, Praveen and Srinivasa Reddy in supporting roles
Development
UV Creations signed Maruthi to direct Nani and Lavanya Tripathi, and the film was announced in February 2015. Maruthi wanted to tell the story of a man who thinks a flaw makes him unworthy of love. Nani nearly turned it down because of the director’s earlier racy films, but he liked that the script had no irrelevant comedy tracks. The title comes from an M. S. Viswanathan song in K. Balachander’s Maro Charitra (1978). Nizar Shafi was the cinematographer and S. B. Uddhav the editor.
Filming and music
Shooting began in Hyderabad on 3 March 2015 and wrapped on 28 July 2015 at Saradhi Studios. The song “Hello Hello” was shot in Goa in the rain on the spur of the moment, and in one scene Nani delivered eight pages of dialogue in a single take. Tripathi, previously trained in kathak, worked with two dance teachers to prepare, and Chinmayi dubbed her lines. Gopi Sunder composed the five songs and the score, released by Lahari Music.
Release and box office
According to the source, the film was made for about ₹7–9 crore. It opened on 700 screens worldwide, including 115 in the United States, where it became the fourth-highest-grossing Telugu film of all time at that point.
Reception and legacy
Critics were positive, and The Hindu called it a laugh riot. At the 63rd Filmfare Awards South it received three nominations, and Nani won the Critics Award for Best Actor – Telugu. The film was remade in Kannada as Sundaranga Jaana (2016) and in Tamil as Ghajinikanth (2018).
