Story
Ramu, a socially awkward cardiologist in the United States, and his lonely wife Seetha decide to divorce and visit his mother, Satyabhama, in Sivapuram near Rajahmundry. Upset, Satyabhama scolds the portrait of her late husband, Bangarraju, a flirtatious zamindar who died nearly 30 years earlier. Yama sends Bangarraju’s soul back to earth to bring the couple together, and along the way he learns the truth about his own death and its link to a local Shiva temple.
Cast
- Nagarjuna as Bangarraju and his son Ramu
- Ramya Krishna as Satyabhama
- Lavanya Tripathi as Seetha
- Sampath Raj, Brahmanandam and Hamsa Nandini in supporting roles, with a cameo by Anushka Shetty
Development
While making Manam (2014), Nagarjuna grew fond of its village scenes and wanted to make a film about village life. He gave the synopsis to Kalyan Krishna Kurasala, who finished the script in a month and made his Telugu directing debut. Nagarjuna accepted supernatural elements on condition that they were positive rather than frightening. The title comes from a song in the 1966 film Aastiparulu, starring his father Akkineni Nageswara Rao. As Bangarraju, Nagarjuna wore a dhoti and a 1959 watch that his father had worn in his village films.
Filming and music
The film was launched at Annapurna Studios on 19 November 2014 and shot mainly around Rajahmundry and Mysore, including a 1,500-year-old Vishnu temple in Kere Thonnur. Some scenes were reshot on the advice of writer Sai Madhav Burra, and filming wrapped on 4 October 2015. P. S. Vinod and Siddhardh Ramaswami were the cinematographers and Prawin Pudi the editor. Anup Rubens composed the six-song soundtrack, released by Aditya Music on 25 December 2015.
Release and legacy
The film opened on 390–410 screens worldwide. It was remade in Kannada in 2017, and a sequel, Bangarraju, followed in 2022.
