Aagadu (He won’t stop) is a 2014 Telugu-language action comedy directed by Srinu Vaitla and produced by Ram Achanta, Gopi Achanta and Anil Sunkara under 14 Reels Entertainment. It stars Mahesh Babu as a police officer sent to a small town to take on a crime boss, with Tamannaah Bhatia and Sonu Sood in the other lead roles. It reunited much of the team behind Dookudu (2011), but on release it drew mixed reviews and failed at the box office.

Premise

Shankar, an orphan raised by an honest police officer, grows up to become a circle inspector known as “Encounter” Shankar for his record in armed encounters. He is transferred to Bukkapatnam, a town in Anantapur district, with orders to stop the illegal businesses of Damodar, a powerful crime boss whose dream project is a power plant with a damaging environmental impact. While fighting Damodar with a mix of cunning and force, Shankar falls for a local sweet shop owner. He also uncovers a painful personal link to Damodar that turns his assignment into a quest for revenge; how it plays out is left for viewers.

Cast

  • Mahesh Babu as Shankar
  • Sonu Sood as Damodar
  • Tamannaah Bhatia as a local sweet shop owner
  • Rajendra Prasad as the father of Mahesh Babu’s character
  • Ashish Vidyarthi, Nassar, Brahmanandam and Brahmaji in supporting roles

Development

On 23 September 2012, the first anniversary of Dookudu, its producers announced another film with Mahesh Babu and Srinu Vaitla. The script was developed with new writers, and the film is credited as written by Anil Ravipudi, Upendra Madhav and Praveen Varma. Vaitla wanted a character-driven story with entertainment as its priority, and the title Aagadu was confirmed in July 2013.

The role marked the third time Mahesh Babu had played a police officer, after Pokiri and Dookudu, and the character was an encounter specialist similar to his Dookudu role. Prakash Raj was originally cast in a negative role but was replaced by Sonu Sood after creative differences with Vaitla.

Production

The core technical crew of Dookudu returned. Thaman S composed the music, his 50th film as a composer, K. V. Guhan was the cinematographer, A. S. Prakash the art director and M. R. Varma the editor.

The launch ceremony, first planned for 16 October 2013, was moved to 25 October 2013 out of respect for the actor Srihari, who had died earlier that month; it was held at Ramanaidu Studios. Principal photography ran from 28 November 2013 to 5 September 2014, mostly in and around Hyderabad, with further shooting in Mumbai, Gujarat, Ballari and Kerala. Songs were filmed in Ladakh, Switzerland and Ooty as well as Hyderabad and Bellary. Post-production took 50 days and was completed on 16 September 2014.

Release and reception

Aagadu was released worldwide on 19 September 2014, only three days after post-production finished. It received mixed reviews from critics and became a box-office bomb.

What critics said

The article describes a mixed response, with critics comparing the film unfavourably with director Srinu Vaitla's earlier Dookudu.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) called it a “simple, oft-repeated cop vs. don story” with a cardboard villain, and warned that the gags could become tiring.
  • Deccan Chronicle (Suresh Kavirayani) noted similarities to Vaitla's earlier films but said Mahesh Babu holds attention throughout.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) called it Dookudu 2.0, louder and more slapstick than funny.
  • The New Indian Express (Rajitha S.) found an entertaining first half that fizzles out in the second.
  • Sify felt the film relies too heavily on comedy and does not pass muster.

Box office: the article reports ₹18.02 crore in the first two days, but says the film failed to recover its budget of ₹65 crore.
