1: Nenokkadine (1: I am alone) is a 2014 Telugu-language psychological action thriller directed by Sukumar. It stars Mahesh Babu as Gautham, a rock musician with schizophrenia who sets out to find out what happened to his parents, with Kriti Sanon making her film debut. Produced by 14 Reels Entertainment and distributed by Eros International, it was the most expensive Telugu film at the time of its release. It failed at the box office, but has since been reassessed and gained a cult following.

Premise

Gautham is missing 25 percent of the grey matter in his brain and lives with hallucinations. He is haunted by a mysterious figure he believes to be one of three men who killed his parents, even though he grew up thinking of himself as an orphan and cannot remember his parents’ names or faces. When a violent episode at one of his concerts is caught on camera by Sameera, a journalist, the two are drawn together.

With Sameera’s help, Gautham begins a search for his parents that takes him from India to Europe. The central question of the film is how much of what he sees is real, and the answers are best left for viewers to discover.

Cast

  • Mahesh Babu as Gautham
  • Kriti Sanon, in her first film
  • Nassar, Pradeep Rawat and Kelly Dorji

Development

Sukumar started writing the film after completing 100% Love (2011). He wanted to make a psychological thriller and had Mahesh Babu in mind for the lead from the start, feeling the actor had universal appeal. The seed of the story came from a bus driver’s account of a young boy who claimed his parents had been murdered on the driver’s bus.

Production

Principal photography began in April 2012 and ended in October 2013. The film was shot in London, Belfast and Bangkok as well as in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai and Bangalore. According to the source, it cost ₹60–70 crore to make, a record for a Telugu film at that point.

R. Rathnavelu was the cinematographer and Karthika Srinivas the editor, while Devi Sri Prasad composed the music.

Release and box office

The film opened on 10 January 2014 on approximately 1,500 screens, timed for the Sankranti festival season. Despite its scale and its star, it became a box-office failure.

Reception

Initial reviews were mixed. Critics praised the music, cinematography, action sequences and performances, but many found the screenplay too complex and the film too long. It won three awards from eight nominations at the 4th SIIMA Awards and two awards at the 11th CineMAA Awards.

Reappraisal

Over the following years, opinion shifted. The film was re-evaluated and developed a cult following, with viewers drawn to its unusual narrative, its technical polish and Mahesh Babu’s performance. Film Companion later included it in its list of the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

What critics said

The article describes generally mixed reviews: several critics admired Mahesh Babu's performance and the cinematography, while others found the film long and confusing.

  • The New Indian Express wrote that audiences were gripped, “but not for the right reasons”.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) argued that the Telugu format of songs, fights and melodrama makes it hard to adapt a Hollywood-style suspense thriller. A. S. Sashidhar, in the same paper, liked the first half and praised Sukumar for trying a kind of film new to Telugu cinema.
  • Rediff (Radhika Rajamani) found it long, repetitive and sluggish, though she praised the lead actors.
  • Sify felt individual sequences are cool but the whole disappoints, apart from Mahesh Babu's performance.
  • Deccan Chronicle (Suresh Kavirayani) said it falls short of expectations and called Rathnavelu's cinematography its “saving grace”.
  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) welcomed a Telugu film that asks viewers to separate real and imagined events, and called it visually stunning.
  • Bangalore Mirror (Sridhar Vivan) saw it as a refined take on the revenge saga that would be a good sign for Telugu cinema if it succeeded.
