Paisa is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language action comedy directed by Krishna Vamsi and produced by Ramesh Puppala under Yellow Flowers. It stars Nani and Catherine Tresa and was written by Padmasri, K. K. Binojee and Patrikeya. The film is about the power of money and how the world revolves around it. After a long delay it was released on 7 February 2014 to mixed reviews and was a box-office failure.

Story

When a state minister is removed over links to a liquor mafia, a by-election is called for his seat. An ambitious politician, Sanyasi Naidu, agrees to spend ₹50 crore to win it, knowing a victory could make him Chief Minister. The scramble for that money draws in Prakash, a young sherwani model from Hyderabad’s Old City who is obsessed with getting rich.

Cast

  • Nani as Prakash, who is so fixated on money that he pronounces his name “Pra-cash”
  • Catherine Tresa as Noor
  • Charan Raj as the main antagonist, a corrupt politician
  • Akbar Bin Tabar as a taxi driver

Production

Krishna Vamsi began the film after Mogudu, and it was launched in Hyderabad on 29 June 2011. The title Paisa was announced in April 2012, during shooting. Prasad Murella was the cinematographer. Nani wore a Swarovski crystal suit inspired by Michael Jackson’s outfits. The film was meant to be Catherine Tresa’s Telugu debut, but two of her other films were released first. It was set for 20 December 2013 with an A certificate for violence and profanity before being pushed to February 2014.

Music

Sai Karthik composed the soundtrack, released by Aditya Music on 19 May 2013 at Shilpakala Vedika, where Dasari Narayana Rao launched the trailer. Reviewers liked the album. IndiaGlitz called it one of the composer’s career bests, with lyrics by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry.

Reception

The Hindu praised its witty lines and well-made scenes but said it lacked a strong plot and was not Krishna Vamsi’s best. Deccan Chronicle gave it 2.5 out of 5, citing a predictable story with logical holes, though it recommended it for Nani.
