Venky Mama (transl. Uncle Venky) is a 2019 Indian Telugu-language action comedy directed by Bobby Kolli (credited as K. S. Bobby) and produced by D. Suresh Babu of Suresh Productions and T. G. Vishwa Prasad of People Media Factory. It stars Venkatesh, Naga Chaitanya, Raashii Khanna and Payal Rajput, with Prakash Raj and Rao Ramesh in supporting roles. Released on Venkatesh’s birthday, 13 December 2019, it drew mixed reviews but, according to the source, was a commercial success.
Story
In Draksharama, an astrologer, Ramanarayana, predicts misfortune after his daughter’s marriage. When his grandson Karthik loses his parents in an accident, Ramanarayana wants to send the baby away. His son Venkatarathnam, known as Venky Mama, refuses, gives up his own goal of joining the army and raises his nephew with love. Years later, the story moves to Kashmir.
Development
D. Suresh Babu said his father, D. Ramanaidu, had always wanted Venkatesh and his grandson Naga Chaitanya to share the screen. Writer Janardhana Maharshi pitched a story, which Bobby developed with major changes. It was the uncle and nephew’s first full-length film together after Venkatesh’s cameo in Premam. V. V. Vinayak launched it at Ramanaidu Studios. Payal Rajput and Raashii Khanna replaced Shriya Saran and Rakul Preet Singh, who were first reported for the roles.
Filming
Shooting began on the banks of the Godavari on 24 February 2019, with the first schedule in Rajahmundry. Venkatesh was injured during an action scene in March and rested for two weeks. Filming continued in Hyderabad, Kashmir and Visakhapatnam and wrapped in August 2019.
Music
Thaman S composed the songs, released by Aditya Music. They include the title song, about the bond between uncle and nephew, and “Coca Cola Pepsi”.
Release and reception
Delayed from October 2019, the film opened on 13 December 2019. Critics praised Venkatesh’s performance, and it later streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
