Varudu Kaavalenu

Varudu Kaavalenu (transl. “Groom wanted”) is a 2021 Telugu romantic comedy directed by Lakshmi Sowjanya and produced by Naga Vamsi under Sithara Entertainments, starring Naga Shaurya and Ritu Varma. It released in theatres on 29 October 2021, two weeks after its originally planned date of 15 October. Our record lists a running time of 133 minutes.

What the story is about

Bhoomi runs an eco-friendly start-up in Hyderabad and has no interest in marriage, much to the frustration of her mother Prabhavati, who is busy hunting for a suitable groom. Aakash is a successful architect in Paris who comes to India hoping to find a life partner. They meet at the home of the man who owns Bhoomi’s company, who happens to be the father of Aakash’s friend, and Aakash is intrigued by her, though she shows no interest in him. When he signs on as architect for a project Bhoomi is leading, they are thrown together at work, and it slowly emerges that Bhoomi’s indifference has a history behind it. How that history plays out is the heart of the film.

What critics said

Critics found it pleasant rather than memorable. Thadagadh Pathi of The Times of India gave it 3/5 and called it a “sincere attempt at a light-hearted film”, praising Naga Shaurya’s growing maturity in picking scripts, Ritu Varma’s graceful turn (with more screen time than her co-star), and Nadiya, Murali Sharma and Vennela Kishore in support. Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu called it “a mature urban rom-com but not compelling enough”, and Balakrishna Ganeshan of The News Minute described it as a “superficial but refreshing romcom”. We have found no reliably sourced box-office figure.
